I also loathe the odors given off by my even well-cleaned pipes (although the biggest culprit is the used pipe cleaners which must immediately be set outside and not in my under-desk trash bin). My solution was to impress into service all the no longer used cigar humidors I have to store my pipes. It has been nearly 10 years since I took my cigar consumption down so low a single 50 stick box was ample; this freed up three others for pipe storage. It works.

Never thought about a humidor....I have one that holds about 200 cigars. It has been up in the attic since I gave up cigars about five years ago. Pulled it down and figured that I would give it a try. I have to say that it works great and that there is absolutely no smoke smell in the room. Great tip!!

I'd recommend a wooden box with a lid. It doesn't have to be a humidor, though that would be really nice. Wood "breathes" a bit, and I find that a wooden box does really well regulating humidity inside of it. It doesn't have to be perfectly airtight; if it's light-tight, that's usually sufficient. You could even nail together something yourself out of some small boards. With a lid, it should keep the outside odor to a minimum, though the inside will certainly pick up some of the odor.

Update: I read my original post and misspelled "of" for "or." I do enjoy the smell oF all the tobaccos I've had so far. I found out the smell I was mainly disgusted by was the pipe cleaners, yuck. I'm now throwing them in the outdoor garbage and store my 3 (soon to be 4) pipes in my house with a small baking soda container near where they're hanging. On a bit of a side note, if anyone cares, I tried my first English blend (Dunhill Elizabeth Mix), and it tasted sooo good! I'm definitely going to start sampling other English blends. If anyone has any recommendations, I'd like to hear them. Thank you.

HA! Coffee can with coffee and holes! Nice... Anyway, rottingcorpse, you're alright. You'll get the hang of it. I don't have much experience with cased blends or the stink they give off after a bowl. What I do know is that I like Elizabethan. It's not an english but it is tasty. It's more of a vaper hybrid. Good stuff nonetheless. If you like Elizabethan then I would suggest Rattray's Hal O' The Wynd. Damn fine stuff. I want to say to try Escudo but I've never had the pleasure of trying it. Escudo seems to be the vaper that all vapers are compared to. BTW, vaper is short for Virgina / Perique.
As for cleaning your pipes, everyone has their own ritual. Just don't take them apart while they're still hot and I wouldn't hang mine upside down either. Cotton ball... nix that too.
Good luck my friend and enjoy!

I've been watchng this with interest. I can say matter of factly that if I so much as toss a pipe cleaner into the trash, my wife is on the war path. How she can smell that tobacco residue through a trash can is beyond me. I keep a bag in the basement to contain my cleaning debris and it gets taken outside to the trash. Pipes are racked down there too.

Personally, my pipes don't stink, and everyone in my house loves it that I switched from cigs to the pipe, and they remark all the time how it makes the house smell awesome.
That poor pipe of yours. I feel terrible for it, being left in the yard. Poor thing. Forget about the pipe cabinet. Build that poor thing an alter, a memorial, a shrine!!! lots of imported marble and jade doors. When you pull her out to smoke, it should require effort and power. If it's going to be in the yard, you need a structure that will survive hurricanes, tornado, floods. I'm tearing up. I don't usually do that, but just thinking about that poor little pipe, out there in the yard all alone. You monster!!! :puffy:

Fluffy, thanks for the suggestions. I didn't realize it wasn't an English. Oops! I do have the Dunhill My Mix that I might try this evening, and I'm pretty sure that's an English blend?
Settersbrace, cute dog!
Cosmic, pipe stays inside now. :)

It always amazes me that something that can smell so wonderful while your smoking it can leave such a foul and nasty smelling residue.

I've never read the comics and didn't name myself after it, but yep, I do watch it! By the way, I just finished a bowl of the Dunhill My Mixture (yum!). I'm definitely going to have another bowl tomorrow or maybe even later tonight.

I might be last man on the ball but I want to chime in too.

My pipes also do give off some smell if you're near them but nothing extreme. When finished smoking I empty the ashes and then rest the pipe at an opened window. When it's cool I'll disassemble it and run some pipe cleaners through. Yes after every smoke!

I only smoke occasionally as a hobby so I afford myself that luxury

for storage I have a big, mock book lying in the livingroom. It's made of wood and the lid leaves a small gap opened. No smell whatsoever!

I applaud all you guys for being so diplomatic when responding to this subject. I lean toward thinking, it's a PIPE, get used to it or get rid of it.

I clean my pipe after it cools and just let it set. I have enough pipes that by the time I pick it up to smoke its fresh.
