I think this issue recently and get an assumption by myself. The first pack is the most loose and barely push as all people / online passage teaches me in order to save air to keep baccy lit. So when finishing 1/2 --- 2/3 bowl, the oxygen is used up. And there is some moist + ash built upon the whole bowl system which makes ventilation even worse. So this is the reason why I can't always finish down to the bottom. So if infusing more oxygen such as your "pick aside" way, it may work. Tonight I will give this a try. Feel thrilling to experiment like in high school. LOL

try running the pick on your Czech Tool down the inside of the tobacco chamber, about 1-2mm off the wall on the opposite side from the draw hole, right down to the bottom of the bowl. When you re-light, the flame will be drawn through the dottle in the heel of the bowl, making it much easier to light.

Well damn, I'm not too old to learn new things after all.

Some of my pipes refuse to give up the very bottom of the bowl, just their way I s'pose. I just tried a variation of the above, slid the spoon of the tool right along the chamber wall opposite the draft hole. 1 last light and the last bit was finished off.

I've been using the "spoon down to bottom opposite the draft hole" method for years and it usually gets the last remnants of unburned tobacco left in the heel (except on pipes with a sharp inside taper).
My goal has always been a near complete burn of the tobacco. It think it's better for the pipe to get rid of that moisture that builds up at the heel. I usually have only a few blackened, charred pieces that did not burn completely and NO brown unburned dottle when I finally dump the ash. I can tell there's nothing left but ash when the final tamp and "spoon method" gets no draft at all to light... it's all ash.

Well for me, I have to say that when I get towards the bottom of the bowl, the tobacco just has a bad taste to it. So when the taste become bitter if you will, I stop there. Most of the time there's not that much left for me to be concerend with anyway.
