I’ve had a little luck with gently blowing off the top bit of white ash when the flavor has altered. Then I’ll use a pick to gently loosen the tobacco and re-form a nice flat surface with which to relight. I have often been pleasantly surprised at the flavor that can be resurrected near the end of the bowl. Not quite same flavor as the first bit but definitely still worth smoking.

Frankly I'm not even sure if any one puff tastes the same . It's ever changing even if only slightly. Embrace the change!
If it tastes bad. Dump it!

People talk all the time about smoking every bowl "to the very bottom leaving nothing but white ash"
This is high on my list of dumb pipe smoking myths and even dumber pipe smoking goals.

It’s a destructive goal, since in deliberately going after the last few threads of tobacco enough heat is generated in the bottom of the chamber to eventually cause fissures to form in the briar.

Have I ever smoked to the bottom of the bowl? Sure, but not as a goal, never with any effort, and it's always a surprise. Some blends burn more readily than others so it's no great trick requiring any effort. Mostly I avoid it.

Generally, the dottle gets kind of nasty.

Then there’s the “fine white ash” BS. Light gray, mottled gray, textured ash, fine. I haven't seen a really powdery fine white ash since I last smoked actual Balkan Sobranie made by Sobranie Ltd. These days you're lucky if it isn't crematory ash with an eyeball floating in it.

I don't know about others, but in my last third of the smoke, it is not as satisfying as logically in the first thirds or lower steps. Trial and error. In addition to what has been said here. Keep in mind that you are not smoking in a steel or china device, where you could wash and leave the container spotless, to smoke again and not detect any variation, uncomfortable, it is wood, my friend, it is not surgical steel. I don't know if you understand me.

I generally feel that the last bit in the pipe is not worth pursuing. I don't smoke to the bottom and usually give it up when its starts misbehaving and demanding way too many relights to get through it. Usually just not pleasant or worth it. Occasionally though and this happens with some flake Virginias that the last one third of the bowl starts tasting really good and sweet, not sure whats going on there but a friend of mine said it may be that the bottom tobacco is getting cooked a little more almost like a stoving effect. Sounds out there right but its some thing I notice. Go figure.

noticed the effect is more pronounced in dublin bowl. One of the features is the chamber gets smaller at the bottom. Worth owning one just to see if you agree with me on this.

Makes sense since most of my Virginia flakes are smoked in conical bowls so I imagine it does some flavor concentration. Could be i'm buying into my own mythology.
