Folks, the post was from the beginning of January. There seems to have been some, if not all, sold.
I'm very happy! I couldn't seem to locate anything about it online. I have one marked Sparkless Cigar-Pipe,. with an "M" on the mouthpiece (Mastercraft?) The front half and the metal tip both unscrew. Can you tell me from which end I fill it, and how to pack and light it properly? I've tried several ways and it's terribly difficult to smoke. Can't keep it lit for more than about three puffs.
All but the two Alphas, the Enterprise (extra-long pipe) and Dialite, have been sold.
Yeah, thats a Mastercraft, the II 'Perfected' with an M on mouthpiece and the slot vents. 1954ish thru 70ish and the first ones from about 1950 are plain, simple steel nose and most an 'o' on mouthpiece
THeyre not always the best smokers, think shot glass, vs tall cool drink and to keep lit, you need to draw almost constant, 5 seconds and out, 10 at most, and that was a forest fire. Fill from center and tamp down pretty good, till the nose is pretty packed. Theyre a bit tough to get lit and be careful they get hospital hot. I use a framing nail to tamp, in center, leave sides looser, try rotating it too when lighting. a few puffs then roll it. they like to burn out a hollow spot in the center of the tobacco pack, and then its tough to get lit through that ash, just keep your tamper handy, they like a helping hand/nail to get fresh lightable tobacco pressed down into them for round 2. Lose the stinger too if its there usually helps..
Ive looked, theres little online, cant recall when but Id seen a Karl-Heinz Syring zep pipe listed (+10?) years ago, didnt kow where/when/who?. It took (waaayyy too much) time but after a million similar named swimmer and sp correct "syringe" searches I found him mentioned in an article as a mentor to a present craftsman and I think he got a spot on Pipedia now. He was a retired German police officer I read, started making in 80s. thru early 2000s
Cigar pipe/Zep info, theres none, the best are Reborn pipes, Steve restored Safe-Tee's and a few Mc's very nicely, Pipephil.eu has "Pipes~Bizarre" and the Amsterdam museum have a couple, after that its catalogs and patents and ebay/worthpoint. The best example of the lack of info is prob this one, a Savinelli that Savinelli have no record nor memory of,.. like 'stump the band' with their own tune. Just "old, very,.." my guess 1918-25 but Ive searched hundreds of Sav shape charts/catalogs store photos of Milan Orefici 2, i posted here, on the Sav FB page.. nuthin. makes me wonder if its a Achille Sr one off
Ebay mostly. A few of the really-low-end ones went to a friend who has an antique shop.
Thanks for the advice! Maybe I should sell this one, too. It's neat, but I'm not too likely to smoke it much. Is what the Syringe sold for loosely what the Mastercraft is worth too?
Usually they go for 50 to 75, depends, The most for dark rusticated, they can get 80+. One of theose quirky things, the Mastercraft is by far the most common but they sell for about the most except the Vauens can get 100, an morgan pipes do too but theres only a few people who collect the older ones and I think most people get confused by them. A lot are pretty beat too. A couple people watch them tho, and I can see over time, collectors bought some really beat down pipes that even had bad auction pic''s but some Rare ones and they paid for them, someone knew. I only know of 3 specific zep/cigar collectors, my guess is theres about 20 on Earth, And they get the most $ in Fall till Christmas
Mine is smooth, and it's in okay shape but has quite a few small fills.
