Well, Frank (the guy from the **cough, cough** Frank Method) uses a triple jet torch lighter. 8O
Say, what about that? Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. OK, just had to use that phrase. Seriously, what do folks think about the Frank Method®??

One tip dad taught me was, with regards to relighting , just dip the flame into the bowl, not necessarily touching the tobacco, but just enough to heat the leaf and then gently puff to get it going again . The emphasis more on light puffing the than torching the hell out of it with the flame .

Try standing on one foot, left eye closed ... left foot and right eye closed, naked, pipe upside down over a candle, fragrance is immaterial, wick trimmed just so, tiny flame is best and slowly lower the pipe, bending at the waist, until the flame is in the bowl, keeping butt clenched so the feather doesn't fall out, then suck gently on the pipe until the tobacco is again nicely incinerating.
This works perfectly on windy days, if you are inside.

As you can see, there are a multitude of techniques. Trial and error until you find what works best for you.
My method. After the char light and tamp, I try not to stir or press the bowl at all. For relights, I put a flame to the bowl in a circular motion for just a second.

I just tried Warren's technique. My pipe laughed at me and lit itself!

That one is nice. Would go well with some heavy metal.
the music or the film?
I use the method Dave mentioned above (can we call it the Dave method?) without issue. Properly drying your tobacco helps prevent relights.
As a sidenote, I use a Zippo pipe lighter and don't get the lighter fluid taste that some complain about.

Ok, I think pulling the flame down is working. I'll have to give it a few more tries. Somewhat tough to get better at something you do only once every few days, haha
