I was browsing Ebay's pipes offerings today, and was blown away by the number of listings showing pipes with the stem inserted upside-down! I guess this is a pretty good clue that the seller knows nothing about pipes.

I've seen those too. I would think common sense would be used, but . . .
Also, I'm always amazed at how many sellers describe a pipe as "clean" - I'd hate to see their houses, and I certainly wouldn't eat there.

I should have mentioned I'm referring to bent stems -- the result is a pipe which would place the bowl right against your nose - maybe a new way of enjoying the aroma?

Here's just one example from today's fine selection:

One reason it is upside down is so it will stand upright for it's picture to be taken.

Make that two, I was watching this Comoys Extraordinaire 499S this evening....
To be honest, if the price is right, I don't care how they insert the stem. I passed on this one because of the large hole in the stem.

Sorry, I didn't make a note of the item link. Try searching for "pipe" "

plus "vintage" plus "bent."

A lot of sellers do this. In some cases its done to help hold the pipe stable while taking pictures. Its also done to show the under side of the stem to show any damage/chatter. Some just do it to draw attention to their auction.
You can tell if the pipe seller knows anything about pipes by the description they give and how much detail there is. They should list all the nomenclature that's visible, in most cases name the pipe brand and line of pipe, list all the pipes dimensions, have multiple pictures from all angles, and give a solid description of any flaws, damage, and any other issues that are present. They'll also let you know if they cleaned the pipe or not or if its been cleaned at all.

Yah, I especially love the smoke-free household ones! So dumb...
I saw one today that said, "no chatter" and there dents and scratches all over the stem. Don't think he knew what chatter meant.

I seen them too, and thought, do they know it's upside down, and then again, maybe that's a new style and way to smokem, lol.

Sometimes great deals can be found from sellers who don't know much about what they are selling.
Amen, Bob. I picked up a Comoy's Golden Grain bent bulldog for under $30 on eBay a couple days ago, and I'm pretty sure it's because the vendor listed it as a "Compy's" pipe.
Al, I was watching that Extraordinaire and bid it up as high as I could, and then watched it go. Your Rhodesians have lit my PAD pretty significantly, and I really wanted that pipe. Ah well... the search continues.

I think that the “upside down stem” is a new ploy in advertising. Let’s face it, in the world of eBay, there are certain sellers that pretty much own it. The ones that most folks write about in forums such as this...”I will only buy from “fill in the name”, because they know about pipes”. If you are trying to break into the field, what better way than to peak the main interest in all of us that shop on eBay....finding the hidden treasure.
You see a pipe, you know that it is a great deal, and here is the seller that actually put the stem on upside down. Man this guy is clueless to what he is trying to sell. I have found that pipe deal that we all like to brag about. Only thing is, everyone else has spotted it too. By the end of the auction, the pipe has sold for a pretty good price and the “clueless” seller has made a nice little profit. They great thing about it is that he can keep on doing it. He puts another nice pipe on with the stem upside down, and presto....he we go again.

Amen to that! Among my better scores are a mint Sasieni 8 Dot that listed for a $40 buy it now; a Comoy Blue Riband for $6; and a group of pipes that included a Pre-Trans Barling straightgrain, two mint condition Sasieni 8 Dots, 3 mint condition Pre-War Sasieni 4 Dots, and Comoy Blue Riband for $400. The latest one is in the mail, an unsmoked Barling Pre-Trans from the 1940's that I picked up for $108.
Deals like that are few and far between, but they do happen.
