Have you tried washing the stummel in hot water? Basically, run hot water from the tap into the bowl and scrub the insides with a brush. I use a toothbrush and a little shank brush.

Also tried, unfortunately, along with the coffee grounds! Whatever it is, it's very deep within the briar at this point.

The purists are going to hate me for this....... Make yourself a small bucket or bowl full of hot water and Murphy's Oil Soap. Put your bowl in there for about 15 minutes. Then scrub it with a toothbrush and some coarse pipe cleaners. Rinse it out well with warm water. Then put it in a sunny window sill for about 3 days. All the ghosts should be exorcised.

Pack the offending bowl with your warm, damp, leftover coffee grounds. Pack the shank as well. Let it dry out a couple days and give the pipe the old hot water rinse and see if that helps.

This is good but pack it with fresh espresso grounds. Then do a pour through, two shots worth with boiling hot water catching the run off in a coffee cup. Add a dollop of whipped cream and sit back and enjoy the best espresso you ever had while you wait for your pipe to deghost.

Follow directions as listed in previous posts ... or, Google for an exorcist, or make peace with the ghost and always smoke Carter Hall and let the pipe give it that little something extra.
