Looking for a little help on how best to clean the brownish looking stuff inside the stem. Estate pipe arrived today (not refurbished but looks great but for this which I assume is from use and time).

That's what I do. Except I start with automotive valve grinding compound and end with Flitz (r).Tie a churchwarden pipe cleaner around a faucet. Slide stem onto cleaner. Soak the cleaner and saturate it with a mild powdered abrasive like Barkeeper's Friend. Slide the stem back and forth on the cleaner and abrasive to clean the slot's oxidation.
