Coincidently, today I started reading Iain Gately's Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization. He states that there's evidence of primitive pipes in the northern part of North America prior to 2,500 BC. So pipe smoking is at least 4,500 years old.
