I got 2 issues that bother me guys..

the first is my pipe smell.. im talking about it's smell when im not smoking it. it smells like an ashtray.. i have to do something about it.
and the second is that i cant keep the lit properly..

i relight my pipe, take few draws, and after 2 seconds i dont draw the lit goes down, so if i want to take another draw i need to pump it quickly so i can smoke it properly again..
ive tried with/without filter, tried many times to pack the bowl differently - looser or tighter..

im wondering maybe the problem is the tobacco i use or something else.. bahh i dont know.

Rubin, I am new to this also and found youtube to be invaluable. The most common technique for a beginner packing a bowl is the three pinch method. If you have not seen a video on this you should check it out. It helped me greatly. I enjoy the science of pipe smoking properly. I feel accomplished when I can char the top, tamp and relight and smoke all the way to the dottle without another relight. It doesn't always happen to me yet, but I am getting better at packing a proper bowl and can put my pipe down for over a minute and pick it up and not skip a beat. It really doesn't matter how many times you relight as long as you are enjoying your smoke. I have not tried the " Frank " method of packing a bowl yet, but why fix something that isn't broke. Check out the 3 pinch video and welcome to the forum.

Rubin, my thought is that it may be that you need to dry the tobacco before packing the bowl. Many blends are somewhat wet because of preservative agents added. The amount of drying time may vary with each blend. Some are good right from the newly popped tin or baggie, other may take an entire day (or, as some members have done - a brief nuking in a microwave or placement under a reading lamp.)
Try to dry your tobacco before packing and let us know if things improve.

Well you are smoking tobacco so what did you expect it to smell like? I keep all my pipes in large cigar boxes to at least contain the smell, but it just goes along with the territory.

I'll start off by saying that I don't know my a** from a hole in the ground in regards to piping and I certainly don't want to discourage Rubin. But it seems as if everyone has covered packing methods, filter types ect. Could it possibly be the pipe itself??? I know it takes a bit of practice and patience to get everything down pat, but if Rubin hasn't found a happy medium as of yet with all the wonderful suggestions, I just wondered if the pipe might be the problem???? If it doesn't seem to be drawing properly for him no matter what he does.......

Hello again after a lil longer time..

i can tell you guys that its very pleasant for me now!

the reason was the tobacco. i bought the samuel gawith - grousemoor (aromatic) a week ago and i love it since then..

i lit it with no problem, it doesnt bite my tongue anymore (tho its a lil bitter..(?)..), and learned how to control the drawings so it wont get off, and tap it at the right times!
also what helped me crack that problem was the understanding that the drawing is different than cigarettes smoking.

i realized i should kinda drink it through a straw and not draw it quickly and strong like cigarettes..

also got used to not look for the cigarettes "throat scratch".
so it works amazing. and thank you all for the patience and the info!
the only thing that may be better is that the taste is a little bitter after i cross the center of the bowl (i do dump the ash around 2 times after i cross the middle), and it has a medium-strong scorch towards the bottom (before i finish the bowl).
so i thought about trying other blands and just look for the right tobacco for me..
so after all i can say i like it and it does a nice hobby and less an addiction (like cigarettes) for me. (i smoke a bowl at the evening (or another 1 at noon if i have time during the day)).

Nah, it's good for another 20 smokes. ;)
In earnest, change it now. better to smoke without, than with this soaked thing.
