Im new to pipe smoking, only 10 years or so on you old timers.
Just wondered how much tobacco you cellar, why, how much and when do you crack open a tin/jar and why?
Thanks.
Paul.

There have been a couple of threads recently on this topic, search "cellar" and you'll find at least one.

Advance warning: think substantial fractions of a ton, in some cases.

10 years isn't new pal. I haven't been smoking that long.
As to your question I have 200 50 gram tins.
I have 24 jars open.
I plan on opening a couple more tins for pipe club every month.
I'm actively reducing my collection as well, both pipes I don't smoke and blends I won't smoke.
It's a rather fluid hobby for me.

I have roughly 40lb that are accidentally cellared. It's because I bought way more than I can consume due to either my inability to resist a good web sale, FOMO, or just interested in an untried blend. I have about 50 or so opened tins or bulk that are jarred and ready to smoke. I do my best to try not looking into my collection of unopened tins so to avoid the urge of opening a tin of untried blend. It's one of my 1st world problem...

How much? Too damned much.
Why? Because I'm absentminded and keep forgetting what I have in the cellar. I'm also an addict.
When? When I need to. Tobacco is difficult to smoke if left in a sealed tin.

Hope this helps.

We've been smoking a pipe for about the same amount of time. I did have about a 2 year period in the middle where I didn't smoke very often, but I'm back in full force.

As far as how much to cellar, I don't consider a specific amount. I simply buy all that I can afford to buy. I try to buy twice what I smoke as a general rule and let the cellar grow over time.
I have several reasons, as do most who cellar tobacco.

- It aint getting any cheaper
- I've had favorite tobaccos go away for good, so I'd like to build as much of a stock as I can so I can continue to enjoy in the future if they ever to away again (which will inevitably happen).
- My favorites are Virginias and VaPers. Age does them a lot of good.

I also don't have any hard fast rules about when I open a tin. Just when the mood strikes me.

How much?
Hundreds of pounds.

Why?
To have tobacco when I could no longer justify the cost (now) and to hedge against discontinued blends/brands.

Why do i open a jar?
Just because it's what I want to smoke at that moment.

10 years isn't new pal.
Looking back, 10 years is still fairly new especially if someone isn't a regular smoker.

Tobacco is SO expensive relatively to most places in Europe and the US. I pay between 21-25GBP per 50grm tin, which seems high, but I really enjoy the blends I really enjoy :)
I, like you, tend to try new blends as and when I can. I have no more than a few 50grm tins put away - a couple from Europe which cost less than half in the UK, if you can find them. Looking at the US pricing Im quite envious but not enough to warrant emigrating, currently - not that you'd have me.
Thanks for your answers, I'll be 'collecting' more as I go.

A notch more than I will reasonably need at my current smoking rate.

I stocked upprimarily because I was concerned about availability issues: FDA deeming rules, blends discontinued, blenders closing up shop, potential state law changes that could prevent easy online ordering
