But if you buy a lifetime's tobacco ahead of time, you won't have the fun in the future of buying/trying all of the new blends that you see deliciously written ads for or read about about in these forums. :)

I figured it out using my use and average cost per pound (and the more liberal 4g a bowl). If I buy 1 lb of tobacco every month, I will have enough cellared by the time I'm 63 years old to last until I'm 85 (about when most of the men in my family die). Not too shabby and I get to catch all the new blends. So if I buy some bulk that I always like and a few tins here and there for fun, I should be pipe smoking for the rest of my natural life. Of course, I will be buying more lbs when money permits, because the price ain't gonna go down any time in the forseeable future.

I rarely if ever talk in public about stockpiling anything as a matter of personal security. I trust this government not to confiscate whatever I own about as far as I can throw a Congresscritter's spouse. Since that would be about 2 meters, I don't trust them at all...

Not a bad rule, johninkc... I can understand why you would want to do that. For any potential government agents, I do not have any capacity to make any form of alcohol.

All this talk of lifetime supplies of tobacco leads me to another newbie question: does tobacco change over time? Does it go stale or anything like that?

@mick - Yes it does change. Properly cellared some very good tobaccos can become truly amazing. Most English blends with heavy Latakia tend to mellow over time while Virginias and VaPers can become more sweeter. There is no real benefit to aging an Aro from what I have read. Here is a link on proper tobacco storage.
