I usually keep a virginia type blend and a latakia type blend open at once. I am thinking of expanding that number to have more variety. How long does a typical tin keep tobacco smokeable, and how many do you keep open?

I haven't been able to afford another twelver of mason jars, so I've got more open tins and ziploc bags than I'd like.
But I do believe the going consensus (from articles and other threads on the subject) is that you're fine with a tin lid or ziploc bag for a few weeks, maybe a bit more, without much risk of moisture loss or contamination.

I have 11 open now, some for a few days, others for a few months. If after about 4 months I do not smoke the whole tin I jar it.

Right now I have 10 open. I opened a tin of 7 seas regular in July of '11 and just finished it in March. It was fine.

I have about 7, really only three, the others are open, but in humidified storage. I usually keep an average of 4 open.

I have a very limited tobacco supply, so all my tins are open... all 4 of them. Then I have about 5 bags of bulk, one of which is in a jar, as I plan to let it mellow for enjoyment in a few months! All my tins are Peterson's, the round ones over a awesome seal. I have left an opened tin for 8 months with no ill effects, just aging. But two of the tins are square and are not any here near as good as a jar. I have transplanted my Irish flake to a jar to re hydrate and need to do the same with my 3 P's. It's taken me awhile but damn, jars just make so much sense that I plan to buy a couple extra flats of Mason's this year.

Just about all of them. There are about 10 that are "cellared" but thte rest are open awaiting transfers to mason jars.

When I open a tin, it goes into a mason jar. It will keep indefinitely. Mason jars are the cheapest and best way to keep air (tobacco's enemy) from your treasured tobacco. Just screw the lid on tight and open it only when needed. If, over time, your tobacco feels dry, use a spray bottle of water to spray the underside of the lid and you will be good to go. This spray technique applies to any airtight sealed tobacco container. It is all a matter of how often you open your jar and how much fresh air space is replenished which will dry your tobacco over time. Thus, I go from tin or bag to quart jars and from quart jars to the small 2 ounce jars and from those, to the pouch (but only a day supply at a time). Protect your tobacco and retain the moisture level for best results.

I store all of my tobacco in labeled jars, and take few amounts of each blend (around 6 bowls) and put it in the tin and keep the tin in hand. I then use about 5 blends in tins, so I refill the tins once a week; reducing moisture loss from the jars as much as possible. I have also big jars (12 oz) that I use for cellared baccy.

Suppose some differentiation should be made.
7 seas is in an actual tin, the kind you pry open with a coin that is made of all metal.
Doesn't surprise me that one of those could stay good for a long time, they seal just as well as a can of paint, right?
The plastic lidded "tins" that SPC, GL Pease, and Frog Morton come in, I'd be more concerned about. they happen to be all I have.
Incidentally, is there a better name for those?

My whole tobacco collection only consists of 5 tins and they are all open. 2 of those have been open for around 3 months, and are still perfectly fine. I only smoke a bowl a day sometimes none so takes me a long time to get through a 50g tin :).

I usually have around 5 to 7 open. I don't jar a tin as it doesn't stay around long. I smoke all day long (being retired has it's advantages).

I will jar anything that comes in a tin with a plastic lid. I find that the humidity here in South Louisiana will leach out the moisture through the plastic very quickly, unless I smoke the contents within a week. I had about 7 tins open, but I am back down to one as of today. :D I have 7 jars of bulk and tin tobacco handy just about all the time, because after all, variety IS the spice of life. The tin I am working on is Torben Danske Black Velvet, in my jars I have Penzance, Sterling Double Eagle, Sterling Old Dominion, Goedewaagen, Bogafalaya blend from the local B&M, Tinderbox Sherlock Holmes, and McClelland Townsman Cavendish Maple. I just finished a tin of Villiger 1888 Cocktail hour, an ounce of Edgeworth Reay Rub match, a tin of Peterson Sherlock Holmes, and a 2 ounce bag of Just for Him Morning Coffee. It's been a busy week!
