For the first light I usually go for however long it takes my thumb to catch fire. So maybe 30 seconds. Then tamp and use my still lit thumb to relight.

had to think about this last couple of days. i noticed it taste better and smoke is more dense when all of the top of the bowl is lit. using pipe zippo, it's not very easy for me to char the entire top on one go. so, it takes couple of one sec. puff to char the top. sometimes, it's good enough for the entire bowl. other times it will go out, i'll tamp and relight. relight is much quicker.

I like to have the flame touch the tobacco for 1 second at a time until it is lit. In other words don't scorch it. putting a flame to your bowl for 30 seconds strait is a good way to ruin your entire bowl.

You are to hold the flame above the rim, maybe half an inch above the tobacco, and draw the heat down. You don't have to let the flame touch the tobacco at all.
I even do this with my stacks and topper pipes, and the heat reaches the bottom of the bowl just fine without having to direct the flame into the pipe at all.

At first I thought the OP was shining us on. But upon reflection of the silly shit I, notice I said I not anyone else, worried about when I was learning it made sense. I was tired of burning the heck out of my mouth lol. Pipe smoking for me is more zen than science. The correct answer is until it is lit. I know Pipers who swear the Charing light is a match/lighter company conspiracy to sell more product.
Moisture level and cut determine how it lights.
