I fit the question - I only smoke 1-2 times a week; I enjoy the craft of the pipe and am learning to try new tobacco's. But NEED? One is always the simplest answer, two if you want to keep Aros separate. I personally have 14 pipes including 3 cobs.
Would someone brag about only having sex once a year?
Well - if it was one time for 364 days...then yeah, I'd brag.

I should have asked what number is ideal to avoid ghosting. We technically don't need any pipes.
That's like saying you don't need a/c with 100ºF heat and 95% humidity, or heat at 40º F! :) Of course we need pipes!! Not sure where they lie on Maslow's hierarchy, somewhat below water, food and air, though. Maybe after shelter.

You will want to dedicate a few pipes for say an English, Virginia, aromatic, burley blend, virginia/perique blend and a virgina burley blend. That is a minimum of 6 pipes. Might I suggest looking at pipes from this carver.

What does it matter? At one bowl a week, will he really remember what the last one tasted like by the time of the week rolls by again? Conical and cones really aren't going to be a factor.
You'd be surprised at how well memory works with regard to taste and smell... :D It's taken me 3 years to get to the point where I'm having to learn how to deal with a conical bowl (decided to buy myself a Stanwell Pipe of the Year 2016 for my 50th birthday a while back), but yeah, I still remember from week to week what various tobaccos taste like.
Even at the glacial pace of a bowl or two a week, one does find that one has preferences. Pipes that I smoked early on have, in some cases, gone by the wayside as others become favorites, and ditto for tobaccos. I've certainly got more pipes than I need for once-a-week smoking, and more than enough tobacco to last me a while, but as time goes by, you'll get the itch to try something new from time to time.

If you like briar pipes, then 4 should be fine, dedicating 2 to aros and 2 to English blends (Frog M counts here). I also recommend you get at least two cobs, so you can try other blends. That would be mean a rack for 6. However, do like I do and put your cobs 'stem down' into an old coffee cup, that will leave room for new briars on your 6 pipe rack.

How many pipes would someone that smokes once a week need?
Strictly need? One or two, if you separate out pipes by tobacco type to avoid ghosting. That seems to mostly concern Latakia and the dreaded Lakeland Essence.
But have some fun. It'll take some dicking around until you can figure out what tobaccos you like, and what types of pipe you like. Set aside at least $10,000 to experiment.

It's easy, you need 365 pipes if you are a once a week smoker. I always tell once a week smokers to do simple math that will keep them from ever worrying about having to purchase another pipe. Whatever your age, add enough years to it for you to reach the age of 90. Take that number and multiply it by 365 (number of days in a year). Then, divide that number by what you totaled when you added enough years to your life to reach the age of 90. That will mathematically confirm that you need 365 pipes. Always glad to help!
