I appreciate the offer... but I am not quite that old. 8)
I will never own a 57 Strat, Telle, Pbass, or Vette.
But a birth year Dunhill IS a possibility.

Okay, here's an approach to how many pipes you need. If you think of a pipe you know you own and want to smoke, and you can't find it -- not just one lost pipe here, but if this happens routinely -- then you have crossed your threshold on the number of pipes you "need." If you can pluck that chosen pipe from your files of hundreds (thousands?) then you may need them all. If you can't get that chosen pipe out of your rack of twelve pipes -- it has simply wandered away -- then you have more than enough and more than you need. Obviously many won't subscribe to this, but it is an approach as you PADdle your way through your pipe collection.

LOL, okay. We need to stop thinking in terms of pipes.
How many rifles do you need? When it comes down to it, an old S.M.L.E. in .303 WILL get the job done for anything you want. However a nice rim fire, varmint rifle and long range belted magnum round everything out.
How many motorcycles do you need? A 350 can be taken off the road and on the road. It just won’t perform those tasks as well as a street bike or dirt bike.
How many knives do you need? A pocket knife will cut your steak, but a steak knife is more accepted.
So...back to pipes. One is all you NEED, but more than one will give you a fuller satisfaction. In any case everybody STARTS with one pipe. Things just seem to get out of hand after that.

I smoke about 5 bowls a day. I like a fresh pipe, so 5 pipes would probably be enough. Except that I like to smoke while I am cleaning them, so a good rotation would be six. I have 114 of the things, lol. Overall, I have probably owned more than 150, over 40 years. Lost a couple, gave a number of them away, broke 2 beyond repair, and sold 4. Have 7 pipes on various wish lists. Many of them that I do have are attached to memories, making it hard to part with pipes, even those that I haven't smoked in years. Recently, I decided to smoke each one, and get rid of the ones I didn't enjoy. Well, no luck.

So, you only need one. For me, a good rotation would be six. I have a lot of respect for someone who can stop at six.

Each and every day 20 thousand people die of starvation.

1/2 of the worlds population lives on less than $3.00/day

Kids are living in landfills, eating rotten food to stay alive.
Yet:
Kim Kardashian is on tv bitching about the quality of her $75K dollar purse,

Pipe smokers are telling of their hundreds of pipes they own.

Robb Report magazine displays monthly items of absurd wealth.

Hollywood award events have red carpet photographers shoving each other around to get a picture of the $50K dress someone is wearing.

Black Friday stampede injuries caused by the greed of brainwashed Sheeple.
Earth: The Insane Asylum of the Universe- no where else could things be more messed up.

Here
Hobie1dog is correct.
Even the poorest of us on this forum live like kings compared to half the planet.
What I spend on high speed internet alone is more than the monthly budget of many, globally.
This morning, I had coffee from Costa Rica, Tobacco from England in a pipe from Italy.
Just the fact that I can turn a knob inside my house and get potable water is amazing, by some standards.
Be thankful for what you have.

My dad smoked a pipe every day for most of the day, from right after breakfast until bedtime. He only had one pipe, with maybe a burn-out or two on the rack to fill in if he needed a bowl or two on the way to buy a replacement for a pipe that was completely shot. When he used up a pipe, it was not fit for restoration. He smoked only Granger, a pouch at a time, never a tub. He could pack for a two week vacation in an overnight duffle. This was not poverty; he did well in two different careers in bonds and academia. It was an ethic of spare living. For years I had a mere five or six pipes. In recent years, I've used pipes as a distraction from medical concerns about my wife. But yes, people in the U.S. and Western Europe live in a world of plenty while much of the rest live day to day on the edge. For now, our overindulgence creates our abundance, but over time, if we're lucky, most will live more modestly but in balance with resources and the rest of the world population.

I use to live on a NEED budget for myself when I had a mortgage, car payment, kids in school and then college. Now I'm retired and live on a WANT budget. I probably have a couple dozen briars, a couple meerschaums, a couple Falcons with a dozen bowls.
You don't even want to know about firearms or fly rods..
Luck of the draw I was born a white guy in the U.S.
