Hello everyone. Smoking my morning pipe, I was wondering how many times people generally smoke one briar pipe in a day. I have been smoking one pipe about three times a day since I started. This just seems like it makes sense from a convenience POV, choose a pipe for the day and go. Then I let it rest for a few days and repeat, or sometimes longer, depending on what pipe I want to smoke. Is this the norm? Do people bring multiple pipes with them every day? I hear so much about resting the pipe, and I couldn't find anything specific on this particular issue. Thanks in advance for your replies!

What you are going is perfect. I bring either two briar pipes with me or over briar and one cob. But only Incase a tragedy happens like breakage or loss. You can however smoke that same pipe day after day after day. As Long as you run pipe cleaners through it.

There are no hardfast rules, and what you do sounds like what many do around here. I am just all over the place. Sometimes I walk out of the house with a tin and one pipe to smoke over and over all day. Then, sometimes I only smoke one pipe for each bowl. And, mostly a mix of just whatever suits me at the moment.

Most days I leave home with 2 pipes in tow.

I'll switch off every smoke..rarely do I smoke more than 2 bowls out of the same pipe.

My rule is one day of rest for each bowl smoked. 1 bowl - 1 day, 3 bowls- 3 days. I normally bring two or three pipes along with me.

I only have 2 briars, one with a large bowl that I smoke every other evening at home and one with a small bowl that I bring to work and smoke 1-2 times a day. I run a pipe cleaner through it between smokes and let it rest on the weekend.

I've smoked 3 bowls out of 1 pipe in a day when a certain pipe/tobacco combo is really working for me. I think it'll be fine

Great. Thanks! Got some kind of nice new pipes and didn't want to "ruin" them somehow...

I think it depends on the pipe. I have some pipes I can smoke a couple times a day, then rest for the equivalent, I have enough favorites that I can smoke once a day and rest at least a day with no problems. Then I have the odd ones, I have one briar that when I smoke it once, I like to rest it 2-3 days, it seems happier.

For me, one use for a pipe each day, two if there is no other way around it.

Third bowl is usually sour and unpleasant.

I suppose it should depend on both your smoking technique as well as the kind of tobacco.

Lately I've been smoking one blend almost exclusively all day long, codger style, so I'll smoke 3 or 4 bowls per day in each of my 4 aro dedicated pipes with no days rest for any of them.

Yeah, it's all personal preference. I have been smoking my new Scottie Bing exclusively since I got it. 3 maybe 4 bowls a day in it.
It might be time for a rest, but it has had no ill effects.

My mouth produces more than normal saliva and always seem to get stuff wet if I keep the pipe in my mouth. So after cleaning the pipe out after 1 bowl I let it sit 1 or 2 days since I have many many other pipes I can smoke. If what you are doing works fine for you, have at it!

so please tell this new guy why a pipe deserves a rest? Do you mean it needs a cleaning after so many uses or does the briar actually need to dry out or something?

IMO, it's a combination of letting them rest to dry out and also to air out. It keeps them from getting a sour taste and a stanky smell. Briar is a LOT less absorbent than most people think, so the moisture builds up fast.
