Since I like the taste of a new pipe I have never really cared how long it took. Tinskys and Castellos seem to taste the best.

really no good answer
I have found though, if it does not taste good or smoke well after the 3rd or 4th bowl, it probably never will. At least for that particular person. Might be great for someone else's smoking style/cadence or blend choice.
