A beginning pipe smoker is likely to suffer tongue bite and/or mouth burn, until they unconsciously learn how to avoid it.

Like making chord changes on a guitar or picking up a shotgun and breaking over ninety per cent of the targets, there’s a world of good advice on the process of avoiding tongue bite, but you’ve got to condition yourself by smoking until you don’t think about avoiding it, you never get bit.

The best advice I know, is learn how using a Peterson.

Aside from that the only thing I'd like to see is your relights. I've personally found that to be the time where bite is most possible. Soft flames, zippos, matches, or even regular butane with the right technique will reduce that. I personally can not use a bic to light a pipe unless I am indoors and away from any chance of sudden gusts. When I get mild bite it's more often then not from a lazy thoughtless light job.

It has taken me a long time to realize this was my problem, and I seem stubbornly resistant to learning from it... just had to dump a bowl and come inside because I was frying my mouth from relights.

Wisp are my goal. Sometimes I do produce a cloud trying to get it going again.

Maybe lighting up is the start of the problem.
Some of my larger bowls take a bit of work to get fully lit. I know when I've gone too far when it doesn't taste so good when I get puffing.
Rather than getting to that point where the pipe is too hot, with those pipes I'll do the false light, tamp, then the true light.
Then I put the pipe down and leave it for later and smoke a small bowl in the meantime.
Once the pipe has been left to cool, it lights easily without getting hot.
