June 20, 1974, around one o'clock. The tobacco was Borkum Riff Whiskey and the pipe was a late 1950s Willard Caadian. Never stopped, never taken a break.

Summer 1972. Bought a pipe and a pouch of tobacco from the ships store aboard a Coast Guard icebreaker in the Bering Sea off of Alaska. Was a pipe smoker until 1987 when we learned our youngest daughter had asthma and allergies. Started smoking cigars and an occasional pipe after she moved out for college and then about 5 years ago switched almost exclusively to pipes.

I tried once when I was in high school, around the age of 16-17 but that didn't last and became a cigarette smoker for 20 years. For the last 2 years, I've been smoking a pipe occasionally while fighting my urge to light up a cigarette. Now I smoke more or less daily, and still have a few cigarettes everyday but but it's declining, hopefully to reach a complete halt.

Got my first pipe, a Dr. Grabow bent billiard, from a high school sweetheart. I still have the pipe, but long since lost track of the girlfriend.

That would be roughly 1958. Smoked that pipe and a couple more through college and beyond until about 1976. Quit for 20 years and then got to looking for my old pipes in a shoebox.

So, if we do the math, that would make it about 38 years total. When I picked up the pipe again, I became something of a collector of traditionally-shaped pipes. I continue to collect, but not as frequently as 20 years ago.

I cannot think of going a day without smoking my pipe.

Pipes and cigars for 33 years. I was 18. My first pipe was a 3/4 bent little Peterson given to me by my then landord in Oxford. The first pipe I bought was a Peterson 314, purchased from Shervingrons on High Holborn (now sadly closed) which is immortalised as pictured on Old Holborn tobacco.
