Once I quit worrying about all the bs and developed an unconscious cadence that doesn’t cook my pipe or my tongue, usually 25-45 minutes.
I’m usually smoking a pipe in the .75”x1.25” chamber size ballpark, outdoors or driving.

My bowl sizes are mostly medium (3/4" ID x 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" deep). Takes me 1 hour to 1 hour 45 minutes. That's for Flake Tobacco which takes longer.

Thanks for this. I'm thinking of getting a pipe and now think it'd have to be a seasonal thing. I live where it's too cold to sit outside for 45 minutes in the winter, and my wife would kill me if I started smoking indoors. Maybe smoking really is bad for my health.

The more you practice, the longer it lasts.
From simple repetition and the natural improvements one makes, I've probably doubled the number of years my stash will last me, as a bowl seems to last twice as long as it did in the beginning.

Bowl size, type of tobacco, you're smoking cadence along with other factors such as are you active or sedentary, clenching or not, is it hot out or cold, still or windy or are you indoors all factor in and regarding the string comparison, you would need to know the type of string, cotton, waxed, elatic, nylon.

Kind of boils down to toss the watch and enjoy the smoke because “the rules are there are no rules”.

The good news is that many blends allow you to snuff out the pipe and smoke the rest later, without tasting nasty like a cigar can. No matter how little time you have, you should still try to smoke slowly.

I’m not sure. I never pay attention to that. It is what it is. I would have to ask my wife. Sometimes she tells me exactly how long I have been smoking my pipe. 🤣

Depends on the tobacco, depends on the pipe, and depends on your current mindset. This morning I packed a Savinelli Trevi with some dried HH Burley Flake, got the bowl going, and hit the road. Fifty minutes of fairly laid-back commuting later, I arrived at work and still had some left in the bowl.

If I had loaded up with something faster burning, I would have finished it. If I used a pipe with a smaller bowl it wouldn't have lasted as long. If I didn't experience an easy commute, I may have huffed all of the flake down or even just forgot about it. It all depends.

I've always wanted to have somebody make me a large desk pipe and ithe bowl would be 1 1/4" wide and 3" deep for a long smoke.
If I weren’t so damned lazy, I’d make my own with one of those pre-drilled carve-your-own-briar-pipe kits and a length of 3 or 4mm ID tubing. The fact that I’m only a couple of clicks away from throwing one together speaks to my initial point. 🤣
