Freedom for the masses has always been an illusion. The only thing that ever changes is the transparency of the dictatorship and the degree to which they openly exercise it.
I understand what you mean. Much of the content of my political science coursework made the same point. Still, there have been times when the masses were more free than is commonly understood.
To say freedom is an illusion plays into the current political trends. If people have always and will always be unfree, especially if their unfreedom is thought to be the result of shadowy forces, they might as well choose a more obvious unfreedom under the dictator they prefer and can clearly see running the show.
I would prefer people see more clearly the various threats to their freedom and be mentally equipped to counter them. Unfortunately, that asks too much, especially with the
poor and falling state of literacy in the West. When people cannot read, they can only get the cognitive junk food served up on cable news, YouTube, and TikTok. Serious podcasts are a nonstarter as a corrective because of echo chamber effects, lacking audience attention spans, or both. Happy Holidays!
