I guess I'm not in the target group - I don't even return to a bowl after more than 30 minutes or so. Usually I've set aside the time/doing something it is compatible with and that's the bowl - maybe I'll set the pipe down for a few minutes because I need to for some reason but on the rare occasion I've abandoned it what little is left gets dumped.
I'm the same way

I've come back to a bowl after a few days, sometimes on rare occasion a few weeks (Black XX) and the tobacco still tasted fine. Generally, I like to finish my pipe in one sitting or at most, come back an hour or so later. If I have one that's been sitting for a bit longer, I'll light, take a few puffs and gauge the taste. If it tastes okay I'll proceed, if not, I'll dump it and start anew.
This is exactly what I do.

Personally I think re-lighting a bowl that’s sat more than 30min or so tastes horrid. I’m also pretty anal about cleaning my pipes at the end of the day. So I don’t tend to leave half smoked pipes laying around, I smoke em to the bottom clean em and put em away. If I think I won’t have time to finish a pipe I smoke a small pipe or a meerschaum. I also think re-lighting a cigar that’s been out for more than a few minutes tastes like ass.

The only exception to this for me is breaking in a new briar. I will smoke just bottom 1/3 of the pipe until it’s caked to my liking, the first couple bottom 1/3rds of a new pipe might take me all day to smoke. I’ll light it gently and take few puffs and set back down and let it go out, pick it a while later rinse & repeat until there’s nothing left but ash never letting the pipe even get warm.
+1

You guys that think the dottle tastes like ass must be smoking aromatics or latakias. But, with a Virginia, it is basically stoved Virginias, which tastes amazing. I have saved the dottle and smoked it, not as a general practice but just to experiment. It's not bad. And, I don't think I've ever heard someone say that the dottle of a straight Virginia tastes like ass. If so, that is just all in your head.

The problem I have with Virginia that has been sitting is the ash seems to settle into the tobacco and it filters through. I think that I need to ash the bowl if I am saving it.

Aromatics and English blends do not fare as well IMO

Funny story about crocks and Idiocracy, the movie had such a low budget the costumer was looking for cheap things everyone could wear and came across Crocs which were not yet popular and they were dirt cheap, when they were talking about using them one of the comments from the production staff while discussing rights and branding issues with things in the movie was to paraphrase "i don't think we'll have a problem, look how stupid they look, no one will ever wear those".

Most of my pipe smoking is done on an intermittent basis. It's all over a day or two, but I really appreciate having a ready-packed pipe in waiting. If anything, the additional drying time improves both the burn and the flavor and seldom diminishes the experience.

Most of this is mindset. I don't think anything happens to the tobacco over a 48 hour period. It's pretty inert for an organic substance.
