I literally just got my new Peterson Christmas 2018 in a 999 shape and I'm finding it troublesome to put it down. I mean this thing feels so good in my hand and smokes so well, it's really hard for me to let it rest, even though I know that I need to.
I've found this to be true of every new pipe I purchase. I just can't seem to stop smoking them once I buy them. I mean, sooner or later, I have to as I can tell the moisture is killing my smokes, so I'll rest it, but that's typically only by shoving a cleaner down the stem and letting it sleep while I do, but first thing next morning, she's filled with some lovely English or Balkan mixture and fired up again.
I'm not necessarily just trying to hurry up and break it in, although that's a nice plus, I just find it hard to put it down and leave it there for more than a day. For me, it's likely caused by the fact that I don't have too many briars and this only happened with a cob twice, when I got my MM Charles Towne Cobbler and my MM Dagner poker. My Meer also got the same treatment, but every time I get a new pipe it's hard to stop myself from choosing that one. Anyone else ever have this issue?

I always smoke the shit out of a new pipe. I don't do some weird "break in". I load it, smoke it, dump it and run a pipe cleaner through it. I generally smoke them four times without a break. So far so good.
I love my Christmas Pete 03 as well.

I do this too. I will sometimes chain smoke a new pipe for a couple of days if it is a nice one. Lousy pipes, I just smoke a few times and then it starts smelling like sour regret. Those tend to find themself in their box in a drawer somewhere.

Congrats. I'm glad it is turning out to be a great smoker for you.

Seems like this is a common problem. My solution has been to buy another new pipe and smoke that one while the other rests. It may not be the most cost effective solution but I have a few nice pipes with this method.

I am thinking about starting a support group.
I'd support that. :puffy:
Yeah, so far, so good. The first day, I smoked bowls of Carter Hall, Maltese Falcon, Balkan Supreme, and to finish it off for the day, some Gaslight. The next I kept it in some Balkan Supreme for two bowls and ran out, so stuffed it with a little more CH. Right now, I'm not so much inclined to keep it designated to one blend or the other and haven't really noticed any cross-over, other than maybe a little latakia smokiness in my CH, which doesn't bother me at all.

Timely thread for me. I've got a couple goodies coming into the rotation. My wife is getting me a Castello for Christmas. I was nice enough to pick it out, pay for it and have it shipped right to the house for her. Nice of me huh? She has to wrap it though. I've been staring at the box like a little kid. I also found a birthyear '66 Dunhill online that will be arriving shortly. It's all you guys' fault. Thinking I might have a 2 pipe rotation for awhile.

You know? I wouldn't see a problem with this if my wallet didn't. I actually considered it.

That's probably not a bad rotation! Also sounds like my situation, I bought and paid for it, then had it "gifted" to myself. You know, even though it's a Christmas pipe, I enjoy smoking it leading up to Christmas all the same! Hope you enjoy that Castello.
Pssst....since you're getting two, you could always....you know....pop one open to smoke on while you wait for the other...just a thought...

Multiple smokes getting started is good, gets the carbon layer well started, and even better, teaches you the nuances of smoking that particular pipe. I'd say, have at it, until your other pipes begin to fix you with jealous looks.

The Dunhill is my little secret so I can smoke it and be all good and patient with the Castello.

I do the same. A new pipe gets smoked way more often than an older pipe. I've only been smoking for 8 months and I have a couple of pipes that I haven't smoked in 6 months. Another thing I noticed is that since my rotation of pipes is getting larger I'm dedicating some pipes to certain blends.

Same here. Nothing fancy. Just load them and go!

I thought that's what this place was???

Up til now I've had a somewhat smug attitude towards the idea of PAD. But now, well... I might be on board with attending a PAD Anonymous meeting once a week or so. I'll make the coffee. Maybe saltedplug would be willing to be my sponser.

I would say I don't really smoke a new pipe lots more than my other pipes. I definitely favor the new pipe for a while, but nothing like making it the only pipe I smoke for a certain period until the 'new' wears off.

Yeah Hap, when I get a new pipe, I just plug it into the rotation and it only gets smoked when its turn comes up. I have more temptation to smoke my favorites more often than they are currently slotted for in the rotation, but don't. Does this mean I have some piper self-control? :puffy:

I've never really had this issue (much) with my briars. Granted, I'll smoke a new pipe daily. But they normally get their day's rest before I light them up again. There have been a few instances where I smoked one multiple times a day for a number of days, but it's rare. One of my meers, however, has been repeatedly been pulled back in to be smoked multiple times a day for multiple days.

Pretty much what AR says above, but sometimes I've gone wild and crazy with a new briar. Also, on my drive back from LV, I smoked about ten bowls in a new meer in the eight hour drive plus a couple of stops.
