Won't say where, but I saw this 5C Cavicchi estate for sale, and I'm dumbfounded. Look at that rim (zoom in on it). How can someone with the means and taste for fine pipes, burn the sh*t out of the rim of such a fine smoking instrument.

Sure, I get rim darkening happens, but to actually incinerate the rim, that has to take firm intention. Maybe I shouldn't judge, maybe the previous owner had arthritis, Parkinsons, what have you, and they couldn't help it. Or maybe it was a tech bro dingus who pays $1k for a bottle of Pappy. Regardless, it's a shame.

Might be that it's being smoked outdoors, or that the owner used a torch, or overfilled the chamber. I've certainly seen a lot worse.

Happens all the time. That's minor compared to some I've seen. my theory is, it's Zippoed. Laying the lighter on the top of the pipe while lighting. Some just consider them smoking instruments and they will get burned. I have to admit, i have a couple that would make that piece look pristine😉

I use Zippos exclusively and my rims are pristine. It's a soft flame, just like a Bic or a match. A torch lighter is a more likely culprit.

meh. my OCD runs toward getting it lit, less so maintaining a pristine rim. If i ever buy a costello, it's gong to be a flame version to better hide my inveterate scorching tencencies.
I tend to agree. I too don’t seem to get fussy about keeping a pristine rim. Why bother? I don’t have OCD. However, I do have CDO. Which is like OCD, only the letters are arranged in alphabetical order. WHICH IS HOW IT SHOULD BE!

A 5C is pretty spendy
Of course if you are buying Anne Julie pipes I guess its a bargain. Its all relative

If the price is right Id buy it and fix it.

This is why I don't like pretty rims.
I have this Comoys Gold Bark that has a wide rim chocked full of 3D looking birdseye. I have smoked it a bunch because it's a great smoking pipe. But it's irritating to mind the rim constantly. I'm not too worried about it, but do take more care than normal.
But, after 100s of smokes, it definitely has it's battle wounds.
I just noticed this picture is an optical illusion....where is the rest of the pipe?...oooooooo :)

Torch lighters do not always mean damage to rims. I would not suggest using them as I believe it can cause more damage below the rim. Having said that, I've used my oxygen/acetylene jewellers torch in a pinch with no damage😁
