Sure you can. Unless it's cube cut, the tobacco will swell when lit and stay in place.

I have a footlong ledge coming off my roof. I just lean on the door. There have been times when people have opened the door and caused me to fall back into the house. If it's bad enough I just smoke inside. I love being outdoors though.
