Yes, I know how it's supposed to be pronounced. I've seen the old commercials.

But how do YOU say it? "laTAkia" or "lataKIa"

I say it wrong, with the accent on the 2nd syllable. It's how I first read it, and the right way just seems wrong. I know I'm not the only one.

I’ve found the American way is to put the emphasis on the last syllable. English (British) and all other (non-american) english-speaking countries usually have it on the second syllable, (laTAKia).

I’ve found differences in how the second syllable is pronounced. For myself, I pronounce is la-TAH-kia, but I’ve also heard it said la-TACK-ia.

Just for giggles you should hear how Syrians actually pronounce the name of their port city. We don’t say the tobacco name that way but it’s always been interesting to me why there’s a difference.

It sounds like Lah-Tok-Ee-Ah
