Used to use Naval Jelly. Then used some stuff from Home Depot that smelled nasty, but did good job. Don't remember the name. Trying to clean and "restore" my old Gerber multi tool. Take apart, clean the rust, put Tuf Glide all over, put lock tight on screws and put it back.

But don't want to deal with Naval Jelly. Unless I have to. Wondering if there's quicker solution. Thought about vinegar soak, but that need a long soaking time. Evapo rust came up on search, but it leaves some carbon stuff on surface.

A good CLP gun spray will remove MINOR surface rust and protect the metal. CLP is Clean, lube, and protect. You can also use it on wood, leather and all kinds of metal.
I use Ballistol and G96. They are both great....and very inexpensive.
For tougher rust try 0000 steel wool, then the gun lube.
This has worked on my 100+ year old firearms as well as new ones for decades.
It will literally wipe surface rust right off in an instant.

My Dad was a toolmaker at one time. He used to soak really rusted tools in Coca-cola overnight with great results. The younger guys were grossed out when they realized they were drinking that all day for refreshment. I used Never Dull chrome polish too.

If there was something better than Naval Jelly then my old dead philosopher, genius, machinist, pilot, yachtsman, inventor, and raconteur buddy Jack (who invented the orange balls you see at the ends of every runway on earth warning pilots of low wires) would have found it.

Jack always wondered why the do gooders spared naval jelly.

He decided it was because there was no acceptable, safe substitute.

But do be careful with it.

Don't get me wrong. Naval Jelly works. It just that it's messy and time consuming.

I get multitools for Christmas occasionally, and I have yet to get a multitool that I would actually use. Those handles that cut into my hand as I apply pressure makes them terrible to use. Did you find one that is actually functional? Lets see some pics.
They all pinch. You just have to kinda grip them funny. But they do work for me. If I get lazy to get something, I try whatever is in my pocket first. Ruined too many knives to do something really stupid now days.
