It doesn't surprise me at all that you had a witty reply to that bit. Thank you.

I don't really think about packing that much. Usually I'd just take a really big pinch - more than what would fill the bowl, and twist it in in a spiralling motion, press the top down with thumb and rotate the pipe all the time, tucking the edges in. Gives a nice, tight cylinder in the middle, airpocket at the bottom, and loose pack at the sides all around - it's like turning your pipe into a cigar and the briar is your wrapper. Can't say that I ever re-light, but I'm pretty sure that more due to the care taken to get a nice even surface glowing when lighting the pipe.

So after reading this post I decided to try the cube cut for my Dunhill Flake. I packed it tight as suggested and made sure to try to fill in all of the sides. It smoked great until just below the halfway point of the bowl it started to go out nonstop, not just that I couldnt tamp it was hard as hell in there. I just gave up on it, any thoughts or suggestions?

I would put a little in, tap down like shakin a babies hand, repeat and tap down like shaking a womans, then repeat and tap down like shaking a mans hand.

mg, do as Bradley suggested next time. I normally have to use at least one pipe cleaner to clear out the airway every time I smoke as tobacco does get stuck. I also barely tamp when I am using my tamper, just enough for the coals to touch the unsmoked tobacco.
