EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9)

Greetings friends,

I was looking to grab a few tins of new blends (to me) that I haven't tried before and had my eye on the lineup in the John Cotton Double Pressed series. What has been your experience with the blends below? They aren't cheap, so I was curious to see what folks' impressions have been.

- John Cotton's Double Pressed Latakia
- John Cotton's Double Pressed Virginia
- John Cotton's Double Pressed Creme
- John Cotton's Double Pressed Kentucky
- John Cotton's Double Pressed Burley

Happy Saturday to everyone!

I’ve tried the Virginia and the Burley. Both were pleasant, easygoing smokes as the pressing helps smooth them out.

If you have a DIY streak you can achieve similar results with a noodle press and make your own crumble cakes from other blends you already enjoy.

Noodle press, huh? Sounds interesting. How thick can you make the crumble cakes?

I haven't tried them but understand they're mild by design. The double-pressing is meant to smooth out any roughness. Experienced VA smokers might find the blends boring.

I've tried the VA and Kentucky. They're pretty tasty, but not enough nicotine for me, so I probably won't reorder. They are very easy to smoke and enjoy, which might be their chief virtue.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I noticed P&C is running a sale with tins from this line several dollars off, so maybe I'll try one of each minus the creme blend.

I'll have to look into the noodle press idea. I'm intrigued.

The only reissue part is the name. John Cotton's never produced anything of this nature originally. Once Pipes & Cigars purchased the trade marks from Standard Tobacco Company they created quite a few 'new' blends which John Cotton's never originally produced to the best of my knowledge although I could be wrong. That being said what they have done doesn't mean the product isn't brilliant and I for one raise my hat to the P&C people for expanding the brands reach and customer base. If creating a John Cotton's Banana Supreme Ready Rub added a dozen new pipe smokers to the hobby then more power to them I say. The original Standard Tobacco blends of John Cotton's, John Cottons 1&2 and JC Smegma were really a Woodsroad and Russ/Jim Inks labor of love and we should all raise a glass to those gentlemen for their efforts, especially poor old Jim who had to smoke his way through endless prototypes until we arrived at the final canned product as well as the various tasting groups throughout the U.S.

1. I would buy 30 tins of JCBSRB, no questions asked, immediately on release.

2. I will pass on JC Smegma. If KBV comes out with a competing "Eldritch Dick Cheese Bebop" I will also pass. That sounds like an oeuvre I can safely skip.

I got some to try on sale and enjoyed them. Like has already been said, very mild, but sometimes you just want a mild smoke so it has its place. Worth trying but a bit pricey to cellar, at least for me.

The 'Cheese Whiz Supreme RR and Flake' never did gain traction with the various focus groups we tried it on. That being said one gentleman who looked like he had stepped off the set from the 'Red & Green Show' thought War Horse Bar tasted really great. Apparently he had eaten it!
