armonts, yes indeed, it was and is a community and culture with a stern pride. They mostly don't do inferior pipes because their neighbors would think less of them, and they would think less of themselves.

Yes, in French we call "du boulot à l'ancienne" (old-fashioned work )compare all that is still meticulous nowadays compared to the sloppy job quickly made of great current consumption ... :)

In the past and now I have had a great number of French made pipes from various manufacturers,in my opinion, and generally speaking,I find them being very good value, especially the quality of briar they use is often quite a nice, there's one drawback though, and that is these removable 3 to 4mm metal stringers, not so with Butz Choquins and Chacoms but with Jeantet and Ropp brand pipes stringers seem to be standard.

they say that french pipes may be great smokers or straight out crap. I recently have heard this theory that back in the day in st. Claude, mr. Pierre pipe maker carved a few pipes in the morning that were great smokers. Come afternoon and 1/2 gallon of wine later, he may have drilled a few badly. They ended up being sold as well. I have enough cheap st. Clauds to tell that is pretty much the case. Somebody else told me once that the real beauties of french pipes are the ones with the inscription "fait main". never came across one, so i couldn't tell you.

One or two of my French briars didn't work. The most beautiful just had too slim a shank that I could never clear of pipe cleaner fluff and was too slim to be drilled out. But the good ones are so good -- even the $37 EWA -- that I can't possibly complain. Finely designed, well crafted, and incredibly durable. I'd buy the stinker or two again to own the ones I've kept; I think my first pipe from Tinder Box, a St. Ives ben pot with a vertical saddle stem, was sourced from Chacom, still going strong after 40 years.

I’d say that’s a good buy MSO. I don’t like to buy pipes without seeing and touching them in person for the exact reasons you mentioned. Locally the pipe selection is limited so I may have to take the online approach eventually.

I have a Butz-Choquin that's a nice smoker, don't have any other French pipes so don't have a lot to go on.

I recently purchased a Jeantet ! This is a outstanding Pipe value for the money - and very Handsome - Its hard to do better for the cost. Upon receiving it I quickly removed the stinger - It came out very easy - I am a not a stinger guy.
