I’ve worked at a print shop that put a lot of value into ass kissers that do their job poorly but kiss all the right butts. There wasn’t much emphasis on hard work and doing that work efficiently. It was all about appearances. So these butt kissers would come save their work for the weekends and milk that overtime and look like heroes to the bosses. Funnily enough it went out of business shortly after I left. It was in business for 150 years but these morons killed it.

I love working alone. I seem to have more concentration, calmness and performance. If I work with someone, I need them to be a humble, normal, efficient person. If it's an ass-kisser, or a chicken who just clucking, it gives me headaches and galactic stress spikes. The most horrible thing I have ever dealt with was a narcissistic person with psychopathic traits. It's the most vomitous thing I've ever had to put up with.

I don’t have anyone to suck up to and never went in for it - my parents can back that up starting at about age 2, lol. The folks I supervise, with one exception, are all folks I’ve hired and the exception is a treasure. Get good people with good ethics and tendencies although it’s always still a bit of a crapshoot and sometimes a knowing gamble with someone you put your faith in. Been blessed with good folks and who can make the day a pleasure while getting things done.

Being as I own the company, A/K’ing is not allowed. Do the job or move on; and trust me, my workers know this about me. But I am also sensitive to the fact that being the owner, I am looked upon as a father figure, and everyone at one time or another wants to get daddy’s attention. It is a thin tightrope balancing act. When I was employed, I never sucked up, but I did always go above and beyond to help whatever company I worked for (hence the reason I now own a business). This was in many instances construed as being a K/S by my coworkers, but it was me just being me. I say if one of your fellow coworkers is being a K/S, let him be. Everyone has their way of coping at work. The cream always rises to the top so strive to be the cream and Damn the the rest.

Yeah but sometimes the ass kissers want to try and bring you into all off their stuff/drama, when it has NOTHING to do with you just here to get along...past time to get a check, provide for my family
The best way to deal with gossip at work is simple. They say "So and so did or said this" and you say "We'll let's go find so and so and talk to them about it."
Works every time.

Self employment, no employees. That is my recipe for success, the only arsehole I have to put up with is the one I wipe. And I have strict hygiene in the workplace, so I always wash my hands.

I always tried to stay away from the drama and let my work speak for itself. I didn’t hesitate to take on hard projects and never complained unless I had already thought of possible solutions. That said, some AK’ers seem to find some executives who fall for their BS.

I made a few lifelong friends at work, but by and large work is not for friendships. Do your job and provide value no matter what the others are doing.

I Retired last year, so no longer part of the circus.

In my time as a Sgt, then Lt. and finally captain, I would try humor on the offender, then sarcasm and, if required and the the behavior was debilitating to the unit, a transfer or a request for resignation. It should be obvious what the last stage would be, termination. Luckily, the employee union was not usually a problem if all the tees were crossed and eyes dotted. Great documentation was required and always provided.

My troops had enough to worry about without added bull-shit from co-workers.
