This time of year I'm usually alone which doesn't stop me talking with the dogs or sometimes to myself, lol, and depending on what else I'm doing, I may put my pipe down quite a bit, other times not. I would gladly share a bowl with anyone here and enjoy a long discussion, but have to admit my dogs are the best company and we like our at home time undisturbed.

In the nice weather months on my deck, the missus will often be out there and although there is some conversation to be had and the pipe isn't in the way of that, mostly I'm reading or just relaxing and doing my thing and she is on her Nook reading and the dogs are quiet and not needy ---- thanks, you've made me pine for spring and we've got a long way to go!

Different but related:

We read heavily as a family (we just finished Andrew Peterson's The Wingfeather Saga, for instance), and I want to read to my children while smoking a pipe, but it always turns out to be an exercise in frustration.

It would work if I weren't so theatrical in my reading. I "get into it" too much to manage my burn, or else if I focus on smoking well then my presentation is stilted.

So we've adjusted: my wife reads aloud while I have half a bowl, then I take over.

But regular conversation? That doesn't become a problem until I monologue too much, which I probably shouldn't do anyway ;-)

I've been spending the week with my dad, who is also an avid pipe smoker. We both smoke and talk simultaneously for hours at a time. We thoroughly enjoy our conversations and smoking. I don't believe we ever need to relight . I couldn't imagine anything more wasteful than sitting in a room with other smokers not saying a thing.

I miss smoking a pipe along with my Dad. I wish he were still alive to do so. If he were alive now he would be nearing his 100th birthday.

Do you guys just put a few drops of kerosene in your pipe before you light up to keep it from going out?

Christ, If I can make it past 15 minutes without a relight, I feel like a champion

If there are other people around I can usually just insight an argument between them so I can just puff away raising my eyebrows and nodding when someone makes a good point. If the argument is really exciting almost coming to blows my cadence speeds up and I might get nipped so I try to steer it into something we can all chuckle at afterward.

I find that for some reason, people want to talk to me or reveal some deep seeded thing to me while I am smoking… total fucking strangers. Maybe because I just nod, grunt, smile, frown, occasional hand gestures… but, if you ask me a question where you want words… you start pissing me off.
I mean, I’m probably not even paying attention to your self-centered bullshit anyway. Me getting up and walking away is probably going to upset you more because you just “have” to finish your bullshit… way more than I care to hear the end of whatever bullshit you’re telling me.

I’ve always thought that a good idea for a book would be an old guy smoking his pipe as a detective, because (I kid you not) total strangers will just set down next to me and reveal some pretty amazing bullshit. I am a master at pretending to pay attention, but I imagine that if I paid attention, that these morons are confessing some pretty dark shit.

But yeh… fuck talking. Overrated… I get my fill of talking when I coach a speech and debate team.

There is a quiet room at my Local Cigar lounge away from the TV, chairs, and counter.
I love going back there Just nice chairs and guys reading the paper/periodicals/phones.
Just sit and smoke no words, it's rather heavenly.
Then if I want to hear some tall tales and BS political insight I have only to walk 20 or so feet to the front room but I'm usually just making my way to the pisser.

Oh, I would rather eat glass than listen to politics or their pseudo sociological… these things happen because of… type stuff. It’s nauseating. If I wanted to hear that stuff, I’d watch your brainwashing news stations. But…

Companionable silence is always my first choice, when I’m smoking a pipe it’s kind of a little event or ceremony for me, where I can sort of zone out into a contemplative mode and turn my brain off for a little while.

On occasions where enjoying some quiet me-time isn’t possible, I’ll hold up my end of the conversation because it doesn’t cost anything to be nice, and relighting doesn’t incur any penalties.
