How do Oom Paul pipes smoke? I've heard contradictory reports. Some people love them

as a regular rotation; they hang easy on the jaw, tend to hold a good quantity of tobacco,

and have an interesting look. On the down side, some have said there is a problem with

moisture accumulating at the base of the shank, with that extreme bend, much more than

other full-bent pipes. Like any other pipe, some love 'em, some don't. What are your

experiences?
Full disclosure: I have an Iwan Ries compact pipe that is a near Oom Paul configuration, but it is sold

as a bent billiard. Unlike many bent pipes, it takes a pipe cleaner all the way to the bowl and it's a

good little smoker. But it's small, and not technically a full Oom Paul.

I recently bought a Hardcastle Crescent Oom Paul, and I like it. It's bigger and heftier than what I'm used to, but I smoke it as a sitter. Not for clenching.
As for moisture, I smoke English/Oriental/Balkan-type mixtures that I let dry a bit, so I can't really report any particular gurgling that I'd blame on the pipe.

I have a dunhill Oom Paul and everything you have mentioned is correct. They hang great, smoke well, and look fantastic. And yes, they do accumulate moisture most likely because of the deep bend. I also smoke English blends in it (Latakia and Orientals)
It is a slight struggle to get a cleaner through, but easily solved with a falcon cleaner.
I love my Oom Paul and I would advise anyone who loves the shape to take the challenge

I have a masterson Oom Paul, it is a good smoker, clenches well, and hangs well. It was unsmoked when I got it and thus doesn't have any cake built up yet, thus the bowl gets a little hot to the touch, but I expect that will lessen a little with some cake. It does collect moisture, but I smoke a lot of aros and Virginias so that is a common occurrence. I like it, but I haven't found a lot of Oom Paul's that really grab my attention. Also it is smaller than most that I have seen. Here is a pic.

I have a Tinsky Oom Paul that I love to smoke. It will gather moisture but I don't dry my tobacco enough. I'm always in a hurry and need to slow down the pre-light timing to dry the tobacco.

I guess this could be called an Oom Paul. My Lorenzo Artenza. Big pipe and a pretty good smoker. Always good for over an hour once it's loaded up.

My Edwards smokes quite dry for an Oom Paul, as does my Pioneer Meerschaum. The Barling smokes quite hot, could be that I haven't found a good tobacco for it yet.

I have never owned one of these pipes, and probably never will. There is just something very effeminate about them and I am much too manly to be smoking one. I am glad all you guys like yours, I hope you are not going out in public with them. :nana:
Seriously though, I had one full bent pipe that did not pass a pipe cleaner and the other one smoked fine. I am just not a full bent kind of guy I guess. The full bent that did not pass a cleaner drove me insane, once it gurgled, I had to pull it apart and it was just too much for me. I wanted to stick an ice pick in my eye every time it happened. lol

Such drama!! LOL
Yes, it can sometimes bother me when the pipe gurgles but I rarely have any difficulty using a Falcon pipe cleaner, as long as I remember to take of those thin babies around with me when I'm smoking the Oom Paul.
As far as being effeminate, well...If you believe the pipe determines your masculinity, I have several psychiatrist's phone numbers you may want to call.

I have a Savenelli "614KS" Roma Lucite which is actually a semi-Oom Paul. It's the most comfortable pipe to clench that I have, it also smokes as cool and dry as any other pipe I have. I use it for aros because it does smoke so dry.
