How Do I Describe This “Damage”

For some, not at all. But many experienced smokers recommend the less invasive/extreme treatments be reserved to when the milder ones don't work.

I've not used alcohol on my pipes for over 4 years, but then, have not acquired an oversmoked, gummed up estate pipe.

Is everclear pretty extreme?

I’m not one of them, but a lot of very knowledgeable pipe lovers are against pocketknives, Everclear, grapeseed oil, and steel wool.

I don’t know anybody that’s against Obsidian oil.

If it hurts your conscience use hot soapy water or Murphy’s Oil Soap to clean it up.

But whether it’s a Barling’s or a Grabow that piece of briar and rubber stem needs cleaned up, somehow, someway.
