Some people on the internet and forums have said that they believe retrohaling to be unnecessary, but I can't see at all how one could taste anything except ash and smoke without retrohaling.

The only flavors we can taste on the tongue is: sweet, salty, sour, bitter, and umami. All other aromas come from exhaling through the nose. So when you can't taste anything because you have congestion, it's probably because you can't exhale from your nose. I don't see how smoking a pipe is much different?

I don't mean to bash on anyone here, at all, I am just wondering what you all think?

As a noob, I've been trying out retrohale lately. I'd imagine the environmental aroma that persists after a pull is the only other way. I only smoke outside so I never experience the "room note".

With a slight pull followed by gently puffing it out of my mouth while taking short, shallow inhales through the nose (so as to not pull it all the way into my lungs) lets me capture a slightly different, less concentrated flavor than a retrohale. But my nose still burns during a retrohale since I'm not used to it.

You're right of course, but it's essentially just the reverse of retrohaling. You just bring smell in instead of out?
Not really a full blown French smoke. I think it's more of unconscious thing. I retrohale because it's something I used to do when smoking cigarettes. But never really got anything out of it. Even after started smoking pipes, retrohale didn't do anything for me. Then one day, I started getting "notes" from retrohale. I noticed more taste. So, way I see it, I must have smelled something other than retrohale kicking in full.

I never smoked cigarettes, so retrohaling doesn't come naturally to me. I have tried it from time to time and do get a bit more, especially chocolate, notes than I do by letting the smoke drift into my mouth. But I don't find retrohaling either particularly pleasant, or necessary to enjoy the flavors of a good smoke. Perhaps I don't know what I'm missing but I'm content to miss out on retrohaling.

I didn’t smoke cigarettes but retrohale comes naturally. It amounts to breathing out your nose while raising your tongue, especially the “back” of your tongue, to the roof of your mouth.

The longer you wait to raise your tongue once you start breathing out your nose, the cooler and more pleasant I find the smoke to be.

You can also blow some smoke out your mouth first, then retrohale so you only get a “whiff” of the flavor with none of the harshness

I just learned a new word. Umami. Looked up the definition. Now I both know what it means and have no idea what it means at the same time.

The idea that we can only taste these few areas is false! It gets repeated and gains credence but it's easy to disprove.
