First of all, absolutely horrible pictures for trying to sell a $6000 pipe. Blinding glare, dark shadows and very unflattering angles.
Then, very poor choice of stain in my opinion. The grain is there, but very little contrast.
I don't know this makers history, but I've never heard of him/her.
@Chasing Embers mentioned a Bo Nordh selling for $30,000. I do know a bit about Bo. He was a legend in Danish pipe making, but the main reason his pipes command such a price is the foreign market, specifically Japan. As with many Danish pipe makers, their pipes are extremely popular in Japan and China.
He only made 30-50 pipes a year. That also helps boost the "worth" of his pipes.
As far as the price, if they can get it, why not?
Price does not indicate quality, it indicates desirability.
McLaren, Lamborghini and Pagoni are some of the most expensive new cars. They are also very bad cars. They are uncomfortable to drive, almost zero visibility, break down a lot, expensive to repair, no ground clearance .....but they have 3-5 year waiting lists to buy.

This pipe is so beautiful it almost defies description. Look closely at the grain: from the side, the flame is three-dimensional, and in the top view the end grain is amazing. Is it worth that kind of money? To the correct buyer, of course. If I won the lottery tomorrow I would get it in my cart ASAP. I believe what makes it so expensive is that this piece of briar is probably one in 100,000. That, and the fact that Ikebana is a legend.

An interesting looking number but I'll stay with the Legends.

Because they couldn't sell it at $6,600.

It looks almost like a cob😄

Theres really high end stuff, generally designed to bait trap rich folk, if they have the money and want it, thats their choice, not a good one imo but to each their own. Then low end stuff for everyone. And it’s usually the lower Middle end that’s the best quality and value, like Savinelli.

Yes, I think Savinelli is one of the pipemakers that gives a very good bang for the buck. I have a few, and they are all great smokers!

hey value is totally subjective in a way. The more expensive a pipe like this is the less people will like it, but the people that like it will really like it.
Mid level still has broad appeal, high end will always have limited appeal.
That's how high end stuff works. Additionally any expensive thing is a signifier not only of wealth but also interests. If you smoke that pipe it communicates to a small number of people that your interest in pipes has a certain bent and that not only are you wealthy and have disposable income but of all the things you could spend the extra cash on you will spend it on your enjoyment of pipes.
Sure I never want to buy such a thing but I can think of far worst things to waste the same money on. Clothing for example.
I've paid more for a special edition of a book when I could have gotten the most important part the words for free (public domain). Or have spent money on an import of an album I already own because one of the tracks has different production then the American version of the same.
So basically for someone that pipe has that extra thrill to it that they're not going to get elsewhere. So as some of the more practically minded members here have said 'to the person who buys it it is and if it's not you don't buy it'

Dang. I'll happily stick to my Savinellis and meerschaums but to each his own. I haven't even spent that much money total in my 5+ years of pipe smoking.

I think this would resonate with a large amount of people though since music and books are pretty universal.

A $5,000+ pipe would raise eyebrows, lower jaws, and incite laughter in 99.9% of the people on planet Earth. Haha.

It’s not unusual for pipes from very prestigious carvers to sell for 10k plus. Bang’s, Nordh’s, Eltang’s, etc can all bring serious cash when the whales and deep pocketed collectors get involved. If you want a perfect straight grain one of a kind Bo Nordh and you’ve got the cash, you’re gonna pay whatever it the asking price is.
