Oh I remember those threads and I'll admit that I was one that thought running water through a briar pipe sounded like a poor decision. I probably had similar reservations as someone who mulled it over for a year before they took the plunge. I've tried it a few times in my briars but still prefer scrubbing with alcohol - something I can't make myself do with meers, even though it my be fine too but there's frustratingly little info on that to be found. It's nothing to get worked up over either way.

We pipe nerds can certainly try to find a way to make this more interesting than it is.

Jesse, you are a horrible human being for treating your pipes in such a way. The pipe gods are watching and soon all your bowls will burn out because you dared using water on them. There are places in hell for people like you Jesse so best get your one million sun block ready to go.

Philistine.
Harris,

When you graduate to smoking pipes not made from Play-Doh you will lose your fear of water.

You do realize that your pushing steam through your pipes every time you light up, aren't you?

I am pretty sure I am a not a crusader for the water flush, nor even a heavy promoter. I don't care what methods folk use to clean their pipes, but I do care when misinformation is thrown about. Over and out!
John,
You do realize that a significant portion of the pipe smoking population relies on misinformation, magical thinking, and medievalism to make their lives bearable. Don't take that away from them.

Ok I give. I will try your water flush and if you ruin my precious cake, I am flying to Burbank and will get my pound of flesh.

Ok I did it. I took an older Brian Ruthenberg Billiard and hit it with real hot water. Every house or condo I have ever owned I jacked up the hot water heater to high as I like hot showers. I used this pipe as I haven't done a alcohol clean on it for over a year. My after smoke regiment keeps them pretty darn clean. I ran a couple of cleaners into the stem after the water and they were clean.

I had to hold the pipe with tongs as the water is so hot. I didn't see much dirt at all come out through the bowl or the shank. I used a fluffy cleaner on the mortise and it was perfectly clean. That is nothing new as I always clean the mortise after a smoke. I used a paper towel and then fluffy cleaners on the bowl and paper towel seemed to get a good amount of dirt. When I switched to pipe cleaners they came out looking pretty normal. If this pipe doesn't taste any different after all this work I will not be happy. I will announce my presence to the forum as the water police and will denounce the practice as snake oil perpetuated by the Bard of Barling no less. Be ready Jesse. lol

So how many days do I let it dry. Hours, minutes and seconds will do.

You get points for trying.

Question. Did you just douse the pipe in hot water, or did you drizzle hot water through the stummel at a rate that it filled the bowl while pouring out the end of the shank, and kept it like that for a good minute? Did you then take a wad of paper toweling to the chamber walls and some bristles and fluffies to the airway?
Did you reattach the stem?
You should be good to go in about an hour, unless it starts to grow branches and/or leaves.

I water rinse and shank brush my pipes after each smoke, AND I do occasional deep cleans with alcohol and bristle cleaners; I just do the alcohol cleanings much less often than I did before I started water rinsing.

I did all of that except re attach the stem as it was too tight. I am going to wait a while and I may have to put the stem in the freezer. I was surprised a bit with how much the dirt was on the paper towel in the bowl. Then I went to my normal routine of doubling over 2 fluffies and wiping the inside of the bowl and they looked good I did notice that the bristle cleaner I ran through the shank was clean and I only needed one instead of my normal 2-3.

I will let you know when I am able to put the stem back on and will fill it with something I really know the flavors of.

Briar being different from pipe to pipe to pipe, I've had a few that required several hours before the swelling went down eonough to restore a normal fit. The rest were ready to go in about 20 to 30 minutes. Just let it dry out then reinsert the stem. No need to put the stem in the freezer.

Immersion for 24 hours in a heated fuming (86% or higher concentration) nitric acid bath is 100% guaranteed to remove all contaminants, ghosting, and off-odors.

It's the only way to be sure.
Nitric acid is probably not going to do anything to the pipe. I would suggest sulfuric acid or maybe a long soak in citric acid. Nitric reacts more to metals. puffy

Exactly. 👍

To emininate the pipe itself (who'd want to do that, though? Oh. I forgot... Dunhills with non-center-drilled shanks must be eliminated) your best bet is using a Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

7.2 trillion degrees is toasty enough that even Sardinian briar wouldn't stand a chance.
