The English elite put their peas on the back of the fork.
The plebs just scoop them up in the round of the fork, shove them in their cake-holes, and mock the elite.
But there's a good reason for putting them on the back of the fork, which is, to get them to stay on they have to be squashed on with the knife, and in so doing they get crushed.
When eaten in this way the flavour is instant and greatly enhanced.
Now I'm not calling any of you guys plebs, far from it. I'm just using an example to illustrate my point.

Dry tobacco equals dry toast without even a scraping of butter.
Moist tobacco equals five star restaurant.
You really have to define what you mean by "dry". Too dry, and it will= dry toast. Too moist and it =cow dung.

And for those of us who don't care for the flavor (or flavor) of peas, the Yankee way is superior as you don't get as much of the taste you don't like.

I guess dry means a different thing to each person.
For me it would be left out more than 10 minutes.
I tend to smoke straight out of the tin or jar even if it is a bit moist.

Could be the tobacco, the cut, the dryness, the packing, so you can adjust those and see. Does your pipe have very thin walls to the bowl? Some pipes just heat up no matter what you do. And sometimes it is the material. Clay pipes are usually handled by the stem, are just assumed to burn too hot to hold. I find cobs always cool to the touch, as are most reasonably thick walled briar pipes. Trial and error is your way forward. I like the MM cob special editions with acrylic stems that don't need replacement, if you need to try a different pipe. They're about $28, but worth it to me.

Some pipes just smoke hot, some don't, I have a few of each.
My smoking cadence doesn't change and I dry all of my tobacco the same (for the most part).
I don't actually pay it much mind, until the pipe bursts into flames and that hasn't happened yet.
I also have pipes that smoke cool and I smoke them exactly the same as the hot pipes.
Whatta ya gonna do?
