Hello,

I smoke an MM Legacy Corn Cob, it's my first. I enjoy it, it is what I am used to. I remember reading about how to keep the bowl cool while smoking by just slowing down and not puffing as often. I find I need to smoke really slow to keep it cool and it goes out more often.
Is the hot bowl the nature of corn cobs or have I not found the happy medium yet?

Welcome brother. Pack tobacco a little lighter, then smoke slower than slow. Should help. Keep at it and you will fall into your own pace.

+1 ... Also, be sure the baccy isn't too wet (what are you smoking?)
Lots of variables but well worth the journey!
Welcome to the boards!

One often overlooked technique to extending the duration of your smoke is tamping.

It takes some practice and experimentation, but well worth it.

I tamp frequently and very lightly to manipulate the ember.

Also; one thing that will help to get the bowl off to a good start with a minimal ember, low temperature, which will promote a more flavorful smoke...

The "Char-light" (sometimes called a False-light) and the "True-light".

So far I've tried Amphosa Mild Mixture, Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish and a couple of types I've purchased at the local tobacconist's, both are medium-mild English's.
Thhanks Gents, any advice is most appreciated.

Do you have any friends you can smoke with? I noticed a little while back that when I smoked with a friend or two I just fell into a pace that kept my bowl really, really cool without needing to relight. After that I just did my best to copy what I did with them, and just like that I had my perfect pace.

+1 dapx, I too think that it is pace. If I am reading what you guys are writing on the here or just listening to people talk my pipe never gets hot. However, if I grab and xbox control and clench my pipe in my teeth while shooting aliens on the TV with some kid it gets hot fast.

Michael you've gotten some good advice so far. I've only been smoking for a year and a half but I've found that the finished smooth cobs smoke hotter for me then the unfinished rough ones. Besides my custom R. Santia cob, I plan on sticking to the rough ones.
Also I think both of the tobaccos you mentioned probably fall under the aromatic category and can tend to burn a little hot when pushed. (Heck anything can get blazing if your chain puffing)
Welcome to the site!

Wow, thank you all.
There is a group of pipe smoker's that meet locally, unfortunately I work shift work and I haven't been able to catch them when they meet.

Only when I learnt to tamp did my smoking become rewarding - I was told that if your not tamping at least every 8 draws your not tamping enough. It works for me. Only tamp enough to break the crust
