I had not seen this thread, and own a horned stemmed pipe, so...I do smoke this old pipe from time to time and I think it is from around 1910. It has bone screw in mortise/tennon, which is rather brittle looking, so I don't take it apart.

cpf is in the logo, which is for colossal pipe factory.

Normally you can not confuse the horn with amber or something else.

For French pipes in general it was blonde horn, we still found sometimes on pipes 70/80, and not necessarily expensive pipes …
It's a good, trouble-free material that ages much better than ebonite!

The only small drawback is for big bites that eventually crush / mark a little beak especially if it has been wet for a long time.
I have 2 or 3 old pipes with horn pipe, remained impeccable! :puffy:

As in the past Quite a few French manufactured (low-medium price level) pipes were offered with horn stems, today there is this Ropp brand whom still keep using horn, but as for me,I'm not too found of it ,mainly because of buttons on those feel clumsy and big yet often these stems are somewhat thicker, I have had these horn stem pipes in the past, now all them are gone,,

@paulie66scandinavian, my experience is similar. I had a French pipe with bone stem, but it was bulky and the button was large. I gave it away.

npod, if your bone-stemmed pipe was an oldie like mine am guessing it's button was orific as mine was which might make it large. Size of the button makes no difference to me as I don't clench.

Horn is a great material, but it's not longer lasting than ebonite. They both need care or they both develop problems. If you can show me a 147 year old horn stem that's in as good condition as this 147 year old vulcanite stem:

then you can say that horn will last as long as ebonite.

The bowl was cut and shaped in France, most likely St Claude. The finishing and mounting are English, done by Barling in 1872. It's actually quite a large pipe with a length of about 10".
