I've never jarred after opening, but I tend to smoke just one tin until it's finished, so usually about 20 days (for a 1.75 oz/50 g tin). There's some though that I rarely smoke and they've been open for over a year (like my tin of SPC Plum Pudding Special Reserve). I have some others open for a while though, like months, usually virginias will be open for half a year before I finally finish them.

I do usually put open tins in a gasketed food container though. It's not perfectly air tight like a vacuum sealed bag or vacuum sealed jar though. Not always though, depends.

They all do stay in a cabinet though. It depends on the blend. I've been smoking through Kopp YotD and that just sits in the cabinet, not one of the bins, and it's been open for almost 2 months now, but it's also almost finished.

Ohhhhh dang, I just saw the "honest answers only" in the thread title.
In that case.....way too long usually.
I still have a bowls worth of Abingdon in a tin that I opened last October. I also just found a tin of Jack Knife Plug with a dice sized chunk from....um....before my 7 years off from smoking. Its hard....Im pretty sure I could take a deer with it in a black powder rifle. :)

We've had posts about how many open tins you have at any given time. I want to know how long everyone keeps an open tin in their rotation without jarring it -- not how long it "should" be left open, but how long it actually sits out?
I only leave it open if I plan to smoke it straight through. Which means at least five smokes a week. If it's more of a sometimes smoke I jar it. If it's the cardboard type tin I find I can leave it in there if I smoke it less frequently. Generally don't jar tins too often. But if I am not smoking it regularly I like jarring it.
Caveat I like dry tobacco. In fact I'll crack open a tin about a week before smoking it too.

I don’t worry as much as I used to. Even just recently I rediscovered and have been going at a tin of CRF 2024 opened nine months ago. It’s still great to me. That being said, I’m sure a freshly opened tin’ll likely be nicer once I pop one.
Overall though, I have found that it can be up to the blend. A tin of baccy here and there have had a habit of losing their charm sooner than others.

I don’t waste the time effort or space on jarring 50 gram tins.
I crack open what I feel like smoking and work on it until it’s finished or I’m tired with it and move on. I have a shelf for those tins and I work from that selection until it dwindles down. It never seems too though As I have about 30 open from a few days up to a few years.
8oz tins get jarred after opening though.

Tobacco in my neck of the woods has gotten much more expensive and rare and precious recently due to government import beatings and punishment, so I jar everything immediately now. Jars are cheap in comparison, even dollar store ones. I also know what I like anyhow finally and think long term anyways.

Edit, I use the tins to transport what I’m smoking currently tho, I save all tins.

I once cracked open a tin of balkan flake that I thought was 5 years sealed, turns out it was more like probably 3 years open with only 4 flakes left in it, they were pretty much 'dust dry' and the best smoking I have had from that balkan flake by far.
Didn’t the same thing happen to you with a tin of Irish flake, just before I traded for it 😅

A tin can last me 20-30 bowls. So that could take a month to several months. I also try to smoke them straight through.

Most people do not know this but with C&D tins specifically, they include those paper style inserts for you to rehydrated the tobacco. Leave it in the tin. Simply put a few drops of water on a paper puck and put the lid in. The evaporation will rehydrate the tobacco if it has dried out after being in an opened tin for so long.

Never heard of this but it makes so much sense. I'll have to try it next time.

(Although I rarely find a tobacco truly TOO DRY to smoke. I even like my virginias on the crispier side)
