I think that I'm split fairly close to half and half, depending upon what I'm doing. If I'm reading, I hold it. If I'm working with wood or painting, I clench. Very, very carefully I clench.

As with cigars for years I just can't smoke a pipe while I'm working.

I smoke to relax,...most of the time while sitting in a comfy chair following a wee bit of work,....so I'm usually holding the pipe. I like the feel of the slightly warm bowl in my hand.

Besides, there's just something about leaving teeth marks on my pipe stems that I don't like.
So I'm an 80% holder and a 20% clencher.

I have a Becker pipe that appears to be developing more character the more I hold it. This is secondary to the pleasure I get from holding the warm briar as I smoke. Hold it or set it down. It matters not. Your pipes can be happy either way.
