Just was at Tewksbury in Denver, after 43yrs, they won't be selling Hobbit Weed (or any other hockey se blends) due to the new regulations. It's a shame. Such a great shop and such an iconic blend.

Dang that's too bad. I should've ordered some before it was gone. Oh well. I ordered 4lbs of shortcut to mushrooms because I figured it would disappear too.

While I'm no fan of aros, I always wanted to try a bowl of this. Well, just reinforces the adage of "if you want it, buy it while you can."

"Our pipe tobaccos are back! After further review of the new regulations we will continue to sell our pipe tobaccos and blends until further notice. Thanks for your patience and understanding!"

In short, The FDA deemed that small shops that mix their own blends or even offer blends by the ounce are manufacturers and must register as such. They can't afford the costs to do that so the days of buying small quantities or house blends are waning.

I had no idea the B&M itself was shutting down. After reading their announcement, I feel badly for the daughter that had intended to inherit/run the biz. Sad times. Plus, losing a 20 yr business must make the local community feel like they've lost a friend.

I also heard today that they will be closing their doors. That stinks!
Well according to the FDA, when they "reviewed" the cost benefits of the deeming regulations they actually didn't review any cost benefits, and just stated that these tobacco shops could just fill their shelves with "non-tobacco" products which would allow them to stay in business. Unbelievable!!! If they were selling non-tobacco products then they wouldn't be a tobacco shop anymore, and who goes to a tobacco shop for anything other than tobacco related products. Wow... gotta love the logic here. I know there are some specialty shops that sell both antiques, specialty items as well as pipes/cigars etc., but you just don't turn a tobacco shop into a specialty shop overnight and expect to maintain the same level of business.
With the upcoming lawsuit filed by the IPCPR, CAA and CRA; one of the line items in the lawsuits claims that the FDA failed to perform a cost benefit analysis which was required of them before introducing the deeming regulations. There statement as I mentioned above shows the lack of effort and carelessness of their actions which I hope the courts will also see and help get these deeming regulations overturned. If my information is correct arguments for the case begin July 28, 2017.

True. The local B&M here is a great little place--mostly cigars but has a small selection of tinned pipe tobacco. Take away the tobacco and there aren't enough ashtrays, lighters, humidors and cleaning supplies to keep them in business--and that's not their bread and butter anyway. To say nothing of the loss of place--a space where people go to smoke, to talk, to browse and shop. I know it's more true of their cigar customers--but as with Tewksbury, the loss of place means something too--to say nothing of yet another independent business shuttering.

Hobbit Weed sounds good! Never came across it. Wonder what is in it? Maybe someone can try to make a copy of it from whatever stash they have remaining!
