The thing about the Starcat thread was that there was this wild sense of exhilaration that was expressed by the contributors. That's why it was so memorable. Has to have been 2014 because of the Kate Upton video, which wasn't published until 2014.

There was a later thread, the "Epic" thread that tried to recapture that energy, and did OK, but the Starcat thread remains the gold standard.

Poor Starcat was apparently horrified by the reaction and disappeared from the Forum.

Did it previously publish a physical magazine?

You mean this one?

I think it was on the 5yr anniversary radio episode Kevin kind of explained it. He sold a cigar website in 2007 I think and had a non-compete so he was left wondering what to do and some cigar buddies suggested doing a pipe website. Think it went live in 2008 and has always just been an online format. I didn’t join the forums until 2010, but when I did they were pretty busy.

I’m sure I’ve missed some of the drama over the years, because there was a period where I was more into Instagram and less into the forums.

Thanks for the quick summary!

You forgot the ESPN-inspired old logo!

Also Kevin who was the big bodyguard guy that used to follow you around that first year in Chicago? The Luca Brasi guy?

Usually I'm not a fan of old posts getting bumped, but this one is funny.

I sold the cigar site in September 2008 for six figures. I signed the contract the same day Lehmann Bros collapsed. Lucky timing for me.

I registered the domain PipesMagazine.com in November 2008 after spending the day at the Ybor City Cigar Festival when one of my former mods from the cigar site suggested it.

I started building it out while lounging in a recliner watching football with my dad at his house in Spring Hill, FL. I decided to visit while I was in the Tampa area for the cigar event. I lived down in Ft. Lauderdale at the time.

Thanks for the background!

@admin : I have seen similar things happen to curated pipe tobacco portfolios although new FDA rules coupled with cack handed advertising was also a major factor. I guess you have to know your market. Please don't ever sell Pipes Magazine Kevin as it would be like becoming a widower for a second time!
