The oldest continuously produced commercial smoking tobaccos are likely the twist type products like Happy Bogie.

@Briar Lee I was smoking GH brown twist at the Battle of Nantwich re-enactment with the Sealed Knot. I think it suited my Jamestown clay I was smoking very well. Do you think the Clay King can handle the strength and taste of his twist?

@canucklehead I was only having a joke with @The Amish Tyrant:)
I don't smoke my pipe too fast now although some people like to see me make big clouds of smoke with the old clay...

G R A N G E R - SINCE THE 1870’s

Granger was originally produced by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. A Mr. J.N. Wellman was credited with making a pipe tobacco that was "very popular" utilizing what was referred to as the "Wellman Method". This was around 1870.

Another member and I rapped one time about how the Wellman Process was probably leaving the tobacco barn door open a sixteenth of an inch during curing. It's not mentioned on the most recent tub I bought, a 12 oz'er. My dad smoked only that for fifty years out of the foil pouches.

@canucklehead @The Amish Tyrant I'd like to see how long I can make a clay pipe of baccy last. The best time I've ever managed is about 45 minutes with a clay pipe of Condor Ready Rubbed (green packet).
I’ve never asked, but do you clench your clays? I’d gladly take up your challenge of a slow smoking clay contest, we would however need to find a way to adjudicate from across the world.

@Ahi Ka I never clench my clays; I don't want to get pipe notches:)
Clay pipe smoking competition from the UK:
I bet that gazebo smelled good with the clay pipe smoke - and some if it would be mine if I took part!

The Information is obscure. Lost to history I’m afraid. But this may be the small tobacco company acquired by Liggitt and Myers. — If there’s a nugget of truth in their advertising…

“ Wellman and Dwire Tobacco Company, Quincy, Illinois. One of many tobacco companies in business in Quincy when Martha Tolton arrived there. She and her two sons obtained jobs in a tobacco factory. Link to audio description: http://www.alsaudioillinois.net/illinoisalive/tolton-page4.htm

Maybe the amateur researchers among us can dig into the JN Wellman Process.

@Ahi Ka How to keep your pipe lit:
Relighting is against the rules:)
I've thought of just following the advice in this video, just go and find somewhere nice and peaceful (but not a windy place like Bolsover Castle or Baslow Edge:)), smoke a clay bowl, let you know which tobacco I'm smoking and my timings for when I lit my clay pipe and when the last embers of the pipe finally go out. This would be a good practice for taking part in an organised in-person competition. That way I don't have to do a video contest on Zoom or suchlike. I took part in a virtual smoking competition (for the fastest time to smoke a clay) during the Covid shutdown but due to the death of the event organiser I never received my prize:-(...
Been planting some trees this morning - I'm happiest in nature!
