Hello everyone, I had a question. I enjoy strong tobacco's, and just went through a phase smoking through some Burley blends like C&C Burley flake no 1, OJK, Jackknife, and Oak Alley. Now I would like to have a go at Va/Pers, and I was wondering if you all could recommend some that are strong in the Vit-N department. I have some Escudo and it's decently strong, any others?

Cornell & Diehl‘s Bayou Morning comes to my mind. It‘s a strong blend with a good load of Perique in it. I think you could like it.

Haunted Bookshop is not a pure Va/Per as it has Burley in it, but it could probably be up your alley.

Not as strong as Bayou Morning, but not low in the N department either is Peterson‘s Elizabethan Mixture. That one is very balanced and way more a classic Va/Per than Bayou Morning.

I have some va/bur/per blends that I like, but what I'm really looking for are the strongest of the pure va/person. Not that I'm against va/bur/person at all, just want to do a pure va/per run. I'll have to try bayou morning though, and the Dan tobaccos

As soon as I saw that you wanted a high nic VaPer, I was going to tell you Burley Flake #1 or Picayune... but, now I get the impression that you wouldn’t consider a VaPer with burley in it a VaPer.

I don’t think of Escudo as high nic at all. It is what I think if as an all day smoke.
I got more of a hit from the Escudo than I expected, and P&C gives it a 4 of 5 in the strength stat, but it was not like the C&D Burley flake #1, that was a Whopper. I guess I'm looking for va/pers that are stronger (or as strong as, I suppose) Escudo. On a side note, I intend on ordering some picayune in the future!

Most VaPers tend to top out around medium in my experience. That said, here's a few that I enjoy that seem to ring my bell a bit more than usual. GLP Triple Play and Fillmore. Triple Play has some KY in it, but flavor-wise it's well behind the VAs and Perique. I honestly don't remember what I thought the ncotine content of Stonehenge was, but it's delicious and worth trying regardless.

C&D/Pease VAs tend to have more nicotine than most other blenders, IMO. The Gawiths are way up there but can't think of too many VaPers they do that go past medium. Of course, they're all likely to have a bit more pop than an average aromatic or English blend

St Bernard Flake is excellent and I would put the nic content at the upper end of pure VaPers (medium, in other words noticeable but not strong). Esterval’s in Germany will ship to the US and carries it in 50g tins, 250g bags, and 4 kilo blocks like this:

Thank you all for the information, I believe I understand things better now. I shall give these a go!

Poplar Camp is the stoutest of the pure breed VaPers I have ever tried. Granted, it was early on in my piping, but I remember the first time I smoked it, I was expecting the hit, and it set me down. Literally, I set down in the yard while I was raking leaves. It's not Picayune, but you definitely "feel" the nicotine.

BTW, at the New Orleans Pipe Show, some of us were bused out to La Poche to hear a talk about perique and have Mark Ryan show us around the factory barn where perique is made. I found it interesting that the perique process changes the nicotine in perique into a more complex molecule, so that you no longer get the same nicotine from it, but it merely increases how much of the existing nicotine that is in the leaf blended with it. So the strength of a VaPer is merely being able to absorb more of the nicotine that is inherent in the Virginia, or burley if any is added. Just one of those FYI things.

Yes I remember reading one of your posts about that cosmic, very interesting! The rest of my fleet of blending tobacco's arrive today, and perique is one of them. Can't wait to start blending and experimenting with not only tastes, but nicotine effects, and the perique will add a delicious complexity to the equation because of it's nature and how it activates the strength of other leaves. That maybe why the buzz is so different from VA/Pers as opposed to Burley based blends or rustica. I'll have to order some of the pure St. James whole leaf from leafonly sometime. Also I have some poplar camp but I tried it early on as well, I shall have to try it again. The last bit I have is crumbled, bottom of the barrel but I'm sure it will smoke fine.

I suggest... if you do any blending, to let the blend marry a bit by pressing it slightly for a few weeks before trying it. Something magical happens to the flavor. It doesn't have to be pressed to a flake, just set something heavy on a baggie full...

Try rustica and perique, ha ha... if you like falling asleep feeling like you just finished a marathon.
