Welcome aboard, RW ...
Good luck on using the pipe to kick the cigs ... it worked for me, but not overnight ... initially, I had a couple of crap pipes and put crap tobacco in them and frankly, that didn't work so well ...
A friend at work turned me on to quality pipes and pointed me in the direction of quality tobacco, but even then, it required that I find the right blend before I became a confirmed pipe smoker ... after than, it was a very short time before I picked up what was my last pack of cigs and stuck them in the shirt pocket of the janitor who'd come by to clean my office ... told him they were his as long as he didn't light one around me ...
You're off to a far better start than I was ... you've begun with decent pipes and tobacco, so your journey could be on a real fast track and be completed in far less time than it took me ... not to mention the wealth of info you've tapped into by joining this great forum ... there's SO much info here that there is potential for confusion, but hang in there ... you'll sort through it and find your own path ...
best,

Finding the right blend I can reliably go to instead of a cigarette might be one of the toughest parts of it. I remember the Carter Hall logo from grandpa, so I figured I would try that. I can see some validity to the aromatic approach - doesn't smell or taste like a cigarette, kind of breaks the built up expectations of cigarette taste/smell in a good way.
I suspect that I will want to try something pretty nic potent though if what I have on hand doesn't do the trick for me - time will tell I guess. I'm a bit worried that maybe I should have found a tobacco that packs like a massive jolt of nicotene, just in case. On a day where I am really in the smoking hard, I can burn through four packs in a day. Most of the time it's more like one pack a day, or perhaps a bit less than that even.

Welcome to the forums!

Making the transition from other forms of smoking can be difficult. IMO, you should smoke a blend very similar to what you have been smoking. For cigarettes, that would be a straight Virginia or a Va./Burley blend -- perhaps with a little Perique. But keep trying different blends until you find one that scratches the itch. In any event, the best strategy is to purchase small quantities or many different blends. Your tastes will change with time.

Welcome to the circus Ravenwolf.

I've already noticed you making some fine contributions, so it's great to have you here.
Like phil67 I still smoke cigs but at max only 2 or 3 a day, I used to smoke about a pack 'n a half of cigs back when I smoked factory packs, then started up with ryo Bali Shag for a long time and eventually made my way to the TRUE SMOKE which is a briar pipe filled with fine tobacco --- pipe tobacco cannot be beat, it delivers the sacred aspect of the divine leaf in full capacity, so much more so than the needle-fix like properties inherent inna cigarette.
The first pipe tobacco that I had an ecstatic experience with, and one that fully satisfied nic cravings, and went beyond any flavor threshold I'd ever experienced with tobacco before, is GL Pease Jack Knife Plug -- a real oldworld thing, prepping with a knife, the ritual adds to the enjoyment, and brother, I hadn't experienced nic spins (2 back-to-back bowls) like that since I first smoked Pall Mall unfiltereds when I was 15, but it was actually pretty cool, to feel that again, to break out in a sweat and feel that odd nausea, to lay down and contemplate what I had just experienced --- the heavy nic spins came on because I was inhaling nearly every puff LOL it took me a while to learn puffing technique, to slow down, to find a good cadence, to find all the nuance, to discover unknown pleasures, but I finally did, although at first I became quite frustrated and almost gave up, just stick with it and everything will come along most naturally.
Smoking a good briar pipe has enhanced my wellbeing significantly.

Whether you have the money to spend on top shelf briars, cobs are a great way to go. We have two great cob manufacturers as sponsors of this forum: Missouri Meerschaum and Old Dominion. Both offer quality cubs with markedly different taste profiles. Try them both and you'll quickly see why many of us who have lots of fine briars enjoy a cob smoke at least once daily.
