My name is Joel. Nice to be exposed to a wider pipe community. I’m 24 years old and a steady smoker and modest pipe maker. It all started for me at Danny boys pipes at Ohio ren faire where I picked up a Mitchell Thomas church warden. Siting around with my friends not saying a word, absolutely clueless how to pack and light, it was a serene experience. I fell in love. My MT warden is still my sentimental first smoker. After a wile of wanting to start a collection, I became curious as to how pipes were made. To summarize, I ordered a pre drilled kit. Then eventually bought a lathe, a PIMOs guide and went at it. Little by little and pipe to pipe I’ve been applying learned techniques and hope to keep making pipes I myself would want to have in my collection. I enjoy the design/crafting process and seeing other makers craftsmanship and styles as well. I’ll attach a pic of one of my works currently for sale for critic. Tell me what you think don’t hold back!! Thanks in advance y’all.

Welcome from PA. How long have you been making pipes, how many have you made and where's that pipe fall in that list? I only ask because that's a damn good-looking pipe and better than I could probably ever create.

Hello and welcome from West Virginia. Since you are a young man and already making great looking pipes, I can only imagine what fine works you will make in the future.

Hello from Louisville.
What county are you in?

I think your stummel looks pretty good - you're on the right track.
Stem work just takes practice practice practice. Also helps, I would think, to be able to study high grade examples.

Hi, Joel!

You're steps ahead of me in turning a pipe! Taste is subjective, and shaping varies wildly. You'll likely get advice from everyone that will skew your overall approach. I'd say keep at your own vision in making the pipes that you want to see, and smoke. Those who agree will fall in line, in time. The most important part is within the internal engineering. Whilst there are certainly preferences in that regard, there are no shortcuts to carving a superb smoking pipe.

Good luck, and welcome from California!
