Ive never understood the objection to and castigation aimed at cannabis among segments of the pipe smoking populace.

The cocoa/cocaine farmers are always putting down the heroine/poppy farmers. The Crips hate the Bloods, Hatfield hate McCoys... I don't get anyone who says that anyone else is "less than" themselves. Actually, when someone declares someone else less than themself, I think less of them. :puffy:

That really has nothing to do at all with my ire. I am as radically opposed as you can be to the State/gubernment having the power to decide if an individual can or cannot introduce whatever substance they choose to in their own body: sodium, trans fat, sugar, alcohol, marijuana, tobacco, medication, poison.
I simply don't consume pot, see no reason to be associated with it if I'm not and don't think that the song is amusing at all. I don't go to strangers drinking soda on the street to sing 99 bottles of beer to them because why would I?

Ive never understood the objection to and castigation aimed at cannabis among segments of the pipe smoking populace.

In some states like California where it has been long decriminalized it seems many vocal pipe smokers target their ire about tobacco taxing/legislation towards cannabis users.
I've noticed that is the way those comments are often interpreted. But usually they are simply commenting on the double standard in society today...not directing any ire at cannabis users.
And we are living in the era of epidemic double standards. It's become so much the norm that few seem to even notice it anymore.
Personally there are few things I despise more than double standards...and just like laniromee, I've always been against all forms of prohibition.

I get simillar response all the time. My favorite part is the diversity of the people who get excited about the pipes. Could be a gangster, one of the hill folks, some jogger, someones dear grandma, a cop, or really anyone. The only group that never says nice things about the pipe are small children and they ask me why I smoke. I tend to tell them it's cause I am not that smart.

A couple of weeks ago I was smoking a pipe on a bench and had a woman approach me and start a conversation. She is French, though being in Germany our conversation started in German (very briefly) before switching over to English. Anyhow, she started conversation by saying, in her charming french accent, "not many people smoke pipes anymore". From there we spoke about bygone days, culture, travel, art. It was a lovely conversation. I'm happily married to a beautiful woman so it didn't go beyond a cordial conversation. Still, it was a nice surprise and pleasant chat.
Otherwise there are a couple of older fellas I regularly see out walking the dogs through field and wood who join me for conversation and a saunter. They've also complimented the pipe, one of them said his father had a big pipe that he would break several cigars into and smoke for hours on end. I gather it was a big gesteckpfeife.

stupid side note I recently had one of those uptight annoying people do the fake cough when I walked by them. I even stopped puffing while walking by them so there wasn't even much smoke. I couldn't help myself I did the "opera" clap and said "bravo, what a wonderful performance". Couldn't help myself that person was a jerk.

Yeh, I find when I am in a larger city and I light up my pipe to enjoy a quiet moment, people will walk up to me and start telling me their life story. There must be something about an old man and a pipe that triggers people to want to treat me like a therapist. It is slightly annoying, as I usually don't like to take my pipe out of my mouth at all when smoking, or maybe they sense this and take it for me being a great listener. But, usually what is going through my mind is, "GO AWAY!"
I had considered writing a novel about a pipe smoking detective that solves crimes by smoking his pipe in public while people approach him to tell him things that solves his cases for him.

What double standard?
LOL
Yes, double standards are quite socially acceptable these days.
We also live in the era of epidemic obfuscation (which also seems to be rather socially acceptable).

I was really going for irony with "...when someone declares someone else less than themself, I think less of them"
No worries, I didn't take it to heart. I just had to make it clear that it was not the case with me.
What double standard? One is a socially accepted drug. The other isn't. Politicians have to go where the votes are if they want to keep living high on the government dole.
Which one is the socially accepted drug?

Most of my friends don't know that I smoke pipes. I usually enjoy my pipe at home on the porch. It's more relaxing to me in that setting, I find. Although, I do dream often of camping trips out in the woods with some hot coffee and a pipe. Maybe someday soon...

Pretty much exclusively get comments about their dad or their grandpa having smoked a pipe. I did have one guy at a music festival wander through my campsite as I was smoking and he was thoroughly intrigued by the tobaccos. I opened all my little stash cans for him to smell and he was fascinated by the differences between the blends. He walked away with some GH Rope in his lip, courtesy of yours truly, haha. Just another faded festival goer looming up out of the time fog, only to interact for a few minutes, and then swiftly ebb back into the constantly swirling current of humanity, never to be seen again. So it goes.
